If you have Windows XP you can also remove the various desktop icons this way:
Start -> run -> gpedit.msc -> ok
Go to User Configuration -> Administration Templates -> Desktop
In the rightpane you will find several option for configuring the desktop, there amongst 'Remove Recycle Bin icon from desktop'. Doubleclick on that option and check off 'Enable' and click OK - no more Bin icon!

If you have XP Pro, yes, if you're using Home, there is no
gpedit.msc to access.
