ObjectDock Background Gallery now Open for Business!

It’s been a long time coming, but today I am happy to announce we have a gallery dedicated exclusively to ObjectDock backgrounds!  This gallery will only contain tabbed and zoomer dock backgrounds for ObjectDock.  No icon permitted, we have the regular ObjectDock gallery for that. 

All new background uploads are to be directed to this new gallery.  If you have dock backgrounds already uploaded and want to have them moved, then you will need to contact a mod so we can help preserve your download counts if you wish.

I guess it's safe to assume that comments on old docks won't be preserved when reuploaded to the new gallery?

I've begun the task of updated old docks now a page at a time...this is gonna take awhile! X|

just another idea (in short as I have no much time)

testing\tasting the new library with my last submission (the really first on the gallery) I can say that apart the first hours when the skin was shown in the WC homepage in the "NEW" string the visibility is very very poor, I think that the following downloads come from the cross link in the "last skins of the same author" from the Object Dock gallery.

the point is that the main gallery remain the one with the icons ecc. and the anonymous visitors will never reach the OD dockbackground pages, just remember that only subscribers can customize the Explore thing

maybe a better solution would be to create a new gallery only for the others OD entries and leave the Main OD library as it is only for the upcoming new dockbackgrounds, imagine how less work for everybody just the gameicons\skinners will not be glad for this solution I think :)

The current solution should make everyone happy, and that's the goal, frankell. I don't think anyone cares about the name. It's the separation between icons and docks that was the goal, and that's been achieved.

the goal was to achieve more intraffic for the WC site but as I experimented the new OD backgrounds library is a kind of B gallery without any visibility for the anonimous visitors (90% of the downloads numbers) on's more a privilege for the skinners usability and not for the skins visibility , what about the docks made by the great skinners not more around, one name for all: messiah1 ?

It took years to get this gallery into WinCustomize, it's not changing.  I can look into making it more visible but this is a new gallery and it will need to be populated.

The "goal" was to have a gallery for just dock backgrounds. Something I've been asking for for years now. And thank you Spencer for making it happen! :thumbsup:

This isn't a "b" gallery!  :rolleyes: It's a brand new long overdue gallery created just for OD backgrounds. Operative word being "brand new" and it will take some time for people to realize it exists. But if your not happy with it frankell...your more than welcome to leave or upload your backgrounds into the old gallery and that will solve your concern! ;)

Getting back into work mode one of my first goals for 2011 is to make WinCustomize even better than it is. Site traffic has declined over the last year or so as skinning is moving back to its niche “roots”, and getting more people involved here and download/submitting is a top goal

 

 

your more than welcome to leave or upload your backgrounds into the old gallery and that will solve your concern!

 

I already uploaded the skin n.1 on the new gallery and at the moment I'm the n.1 skinner in the same gallery, I couldn't be more happy just to say that my concern was only for give more appeal to the WC site  but I will wait some time before to move my backgrounds ! :)

aw no problems at all WB, just sometimes I feel more the "psychologist of work" I was than the skinner now I am :grin:

I carefully followed your debates with Stardock on the new gallery ObjectDock Background positioning and I must say that I agree with 'frankell' and a little surprised at the responses.

I have a test publishing "warningdock" both on the ObjectDock' and 'objectdock Background', despite the advance one day on the new gallery...

the result on attendance is clear!

I think that the creation of the new gallery has meaning only if it is even visible to the visitors 'objectdock';

This gallery should be dedicated only to the 'Backgrounds' … while it also retrieves the 'Tiles'.

The ObjectDock Background gallery is for backgrounds, tiles, etc.

If you are a subscriber you can add it to your Explore menu easily.  If you are not a subscriber, then you might need to make an extra click or two.  The gallery is a week or so old, it's going to take time to populate and get the word out.

Let me make note now: the gallery is not changing.

Thank you. A lot of people wanted this and now it's available so lets not complain about it, enjoy having a place to just put BG.  Look at it this way. If they took your favorite TV show and sent it to a new channel. You may miss the next show till you find it, but it will be found and you will never miss your show again.

Geezus...like ID said...as well as myself...it takes time for people to get used to a brand new gallery...so naturally your downloads will drop off until that happens. So just be patient and things will pick up...the new gallery has only been there for a few days. In the meantime you can work on your creation skills.

Once people see there are no longer dock backgrounds in the old gallery they will hunt them down. It's not like there are a lot of places to go to find them and I'd venture to say WC has the biggest gallery of OD backgrounds. Or you can just leave your submissions in the old gallery if your more concerned with downloads.

For any 'new' uploads of ObjectDock backgrounds please restrict uploads to the new Backgrounds section only.

after this ID statement I really had no more proposals (old or new) or exceptions to debate

I also decided to update and move my first dockbackgrounds dated 2008, as my first attempts they were 4 (very easy) Tiles

(I also imagine that a skin featuring only the foreground it will be OK, but I will like a confirm )

I noticed that the WarmingDock by B2R was deleted from the OD gallery but the PSP Dock by TriDragon is still there, probably a filter by the moderators would be a better solution !  :|

Sincerely, this is great news for ObjectDock users, but I think it would make a lot more sense for someone inside Wincustomize to manually transfer existing dock backgrounds from the old gallery into the new gallery with the help of a script. This script should also automatically preserve/transfer download numbers, user comments, author information, etc..., if possible.

It would be a pain for whomever had to do this, but I bet in 2 days or less the work would be done and everybody would be happy.

As it is, this will be highly confusing... ObjectDock users looking for dock backgrounds will have to search both galleries for years to come, and I bet moderators will, from now on, spend a lot of time moving new background submissions posted by confused users (they will see dock backgrounds in the old gallery, after all).

And if moderators can't/won't move new backgrounds posted in the old gallery, then adding the new gallery will have been for nothing, as most users will just post their backgrounds into the old gallery anyway (more visibility/downloads there, as someone already pointed out).

A little pain now can save you a lot of pain later, IMO! :)

Moving backgrounds from one gallery to another isn't easy in our system.  It would require dev time being taken from other things I need done to the site.  Honestly, more important things that moving docks that are 2+ years old.

And if moderators can't/won't move new backgrounds posted in the old gallery, then adding the new gallery will have been for nothing, as most users will just post their backgrounds into the old gallery anyway (more visibility/downloads there, as someone already pointed out).

We are moving backgrounds if requested.  Any new submissions are only going to be allowed in the new gallery, not the old.

Any new OD background uploads that do not have the new 'background' category selected will be rejected and the uploader notified to re-submit to the proper section.  This is not a new policy as some have uploaded skins and not selected the correct section for other libraries and they have been informed to re-upload again to the proper area.

Selecting the correct library is the uploaders responsibility as moderation tools do not allow Moderators to relocate them.
