Blog: Aero Skinning, Modelers, and unorthodox skinning...

Has anyone noticed that the quality of WindowBlinds visual styles has improved lately? There's been some really great stuff coming from people like MikeB, Boxxi, and many others. With WindowBlinds 4.4 now out for registered/Object Desktop users, it's a perfect storm of good things for users (like me) who are really into this stuff.

One of the internal debates right now is whether to support Aero-style semi-transparencies in borders. We don't know how well it could be done without affecting performance. There's still lots of people who argue (incorrectly) that WindowBlinds is "slow" despite the fact it's faster than what's built into Windows XP.  I can guarantee that there's be some performance hit on all but the latest video cards for semi-transparent borders. It would be non-trivial to go and do this well. My personal feeling is I'd like to see shadows in WindowFX made more seamless. How many of you run with shadows on all the time? If not, why? I don't because I feel (maybe wrongly) that they slow down my computer. I think the first quest is to find a way to make shadows perfect as long as you have a high end video card that has proper drivers. That would be the proof of concept. I do agree that semi transparent window title bars and borders might be cool.  And I have no doubt lots of people would like the feature. The question is merely whether it's feasible or not.

Meanwhile, things are crazy at the office as usual. We're working on buying a building. Right now, we lease our building over in Livonia Michigan. But this Winter, we hope to migrate to a brand new building we're buying. We're very excited about it.  Once we're over there, we'll have more room to start hiring more peple.

Speaking of hiring, we're still in a bit of a world of pain in the art department. We really need a senior level 3D modeler, preferably one with some animation skills (i.e. someone with some serious experience). We have a fantasy strategy game in early development and we're really weak in the 3D modeling of organic things (trolls, orcs, elves, etc.).  So if you know anyone whose really good at modeling things (and I mean really good -- we have good modelers already but we don't have ones who are experienced enough to make convincing organic things fairly quickly) then have them email me ([email protected]).  And no, you can't work from remote (we get a lot of people saying they're happy to work with us, for lots of money, as long as they can work from home, we need someone on hand).

We're working with SkinPlant on a really cool new skin suite called Unorthodox. The idea is to create some truly unique looking skins that approach GUI design from new angles. We hope to have that done by October.  Meanwhile, Mormegil is nearly done with the Utopia icon suite. It's a sequel to his popular Orion icon suite. He's been working on Utopia for over a year now. It's a huge undertaking as there are so many icons in it and he has strived to create something both unique as well as something you'd want to use.  We're hoping that'll come out in October as well -- 2 years after Orion.

Next week, WinCustomize subscribers will be able to start having their own personal pages via the new WC2K5 technology. WC2K5 won't be done next week for subscribers, just the personal home pages. But I think a lot of it will blow people away. The amount of "stuff" there is, frankly, incredibly cool. By the end of September, the beta of WC2K5 will be ready for subscribers.  The full WC2K5 will be a pretty dramatic departure from the WinCustomize of today. It'll be a tabbed interface. Things will be context driven. So when you go to the WindowBlinds library, you'll see the most popular WindowBlinds skins and WindowBlinds authors along with the most recent discussions about WindowBlinds and WindowBlinds tutorials. That's what would appear on the right bar instead of the same stuff on every page.  From a speed point of view, things are really different. Right now, everything on WinCustomize is database drive.  But in WC2K5, there will be a lot of pages cached so that performance should be much higher.

On Object Desktop, two new components are about to go into alpha/beta -- RightClick should show up next week and Web Explorer (think Internet Explorer with a tabbed interface and some other goodies built in).

Brad, what are the odds that perhaps we could invoke a poll to determine whether or not (and/or how soon) Windowblinds should inclue semi-transparency. Even if semi-transparency is allowed, that doesn't mean that everyone is forced to use it. Semi-transparency seems to be the next step up, and there is no reason to set its release date back. But if people do feel so, why not try a poll? Even if the results won't be use, wouldn't it be nice to see?

Think of the possibilities.

Yeah, I think a poll would be a good idea, although I personally don't see why you wouldn't want to use semi-transparency in WB. Like xxZeroVirusxx said, one wouldn't have to use it he didn't want to. Plus it does give skinners something totally cool to play with!

"But please have a popup blocker too in it, don't rely on the fact that SP2 already has that feature, as a lot of us don't have SP2 and nor do they want it..."

I'm sorry, I really am but you are a fool for not installing SP2. >

Yes Please add the semi transparency. It would me a nice addition to a already good windowblinds.

In case there was any confusion before, PLEASE ADD SEMI-TRANSPARENCY TO WINDOWBLINDS!

New hardware with new feats & possibilities.
Isn't it just logical to utilize those in the 2D desktop?
Shadows, new Fx, transparency, etc I say make WB (and WinFX)
use it!!!

I agree with people above that WB could mimic XP on Win9x.
Now make us recreate Longhorn Glass on XP.

Forget 9x, its dead let it die in peace and concentrate on the future with the NT based oses where you can get the most out of windowblinds. with that said please add per-pixel alpha blending to windowblinds, the sooner you implement it the sooner you will be able to get the bugs and kinks out like you did with the other builds of windowblinds which in my eyes has made it far superior to the msstyle format and has made me into a full blown stardock addict. please give me more features to feed my addiction *twitch*.

chalk one up for me for semi-transparency in windowblinds. this is someting I"ve been wanting to see for sometime.

you mention great skins have come out recently...just imagine how much you'd raise the bar if semi-transparent skins came out. the possiblities are endless and intriguing, one that I cannot wait to see.

I want to be in the books as having voted FOR semi-transparency support in WB and any other apps. I've wanted it for ages as well.
Especially if it's a toggle-able option, I don't see the harm.
ADD IT!

I love most of the Object Desktop products and I find that they do not take up much memory to run. I remeber Windowblinds back in the days of 2.x and it has definatly come a long way. Right now have to say that the two components that I don't install because of serious problems are Win FX and Desktop X. I find that they both slow down my computer and make it difficult to do things,The system is a 2.8 HT P3, ASUS motherboard 1024 mb ram plenty of HD space and an ATI 9700 Pro all in wonder, I want my system at peak performance and I see performance go down with Most of the Object Desktop Products. Lately I have not seen any skind I find usefull also, I stick to Blackcomb, MSN Premium 9, Aqua and those types of skins, I need productivity even though I like the desktop to look great, that is part of the reason I did not renew my Object Desktop Subscription, And alot of the skins that I liked have not been up-dated for the newer versions of Windowblinds or they have not made complete suites with everything

snowleopard77, I have a 3.0 P4, 1 gig RAM, GF4 Ti 4600, XP SP2 and I run many processor intensive tasks and neither of those programs degrade my systems performance. DesktopX 2.2 also uses Direct GUI, which takes virtually no CPU hit.

Yes, please do add support for alpha transparency for the window borders (and everything else, if possible )

Not being able to use TGA's with alpha channels for the window borders, is THE reason why I only create square window borders for my skins! I HATE the look of jagged edges. It just isn't attractive.
Absolutely! PLS do add alpha trasp. blend support to WB. Currently using FX for the Aero style effect, would be nice to have as a part of WB may improve performance and create a cleaner look for win. borders.

A positive Vote for Alpha Transperency support in WB Here! Do it Stardock... please
Reply #90 Top
i vote for more wb transperencies... though personally i would really want it added to window bg's too.

I would actually prefer that to winfx feature upgrades, since a few skins i want to make would depend heavily on improved transparencies. Meanwhile winfx could be improved, but is relatively satisfactory for me.

To sum up, for me:
wb transparency upgrades > winfx improvements

snowleopard77, I had a radeon 9700 pro and I also had a ton of problems with a lot of stardock apps but as soon as I changed to a geforce 5900 ultra it all went away(i tried everything I could, from every driver revision i could get my hands on) and now I have a 6800 gt it runs just the same. Not meaning to flame here but ati seems to suck when it comes to desktop acceleration of any kind(and yes I still have the radeon 9700 in my dads comp, 2.4ghz P4 512mb of ram and it still has serious problems with WindowFX even with the newest drivers). Try a different card if you can, not just an nvidia card try another ati card it might just be the 9700 because my friend scott hasn't had any problems with his 9800 pro.
But is there any information about it?
Are you sure it would be possible to implement into WB without Avalon on XP?
Its not so much the ATI line that sucks its their basic drivers. Ive had tons of problems running games, graphic accelerated apps, until I started using Omega drivers (ggogle) and now my 9700 Pro flat out smokes on everything.

Can't edit my last post, but wanted to add that I have Gig of RAM and never use half of it so I'm not too worried about the performace hit.

Sounds like an excellent feature. I don't have much to say because i'm in the early stages of using WindowsXP once again - coming from OSX.

Well then you know how it will be like Allan because OSX has that feature in it's titlebars which all themes on it make use of (even if it is just to antialias the rounded corners).
