WinCustomize 2K5 Roll-out: Phase 3

Open Beta

December 7 approaches. That's the official date that WinCustomize 2K5 replaces the old WinCustomize.com.

We still have features to implement of course. But hopefully things are coming down to the final stretch. So what do we have left to do before launch? Lots of things but here are some things we're struggling with:

  • The home page. We are still worried that the home page is too busy. Too intimidating to a casual user. Should we get rid of the right column? Or left column? Should we have the newest additions be replace by a mini-thumbnail view of some recent or popular skins? Should we combine the daily shot and the featured skin together? Or is it fine as it is?
  • The Colors. We're not sold on the colors of the new site.  Tangerine for the home page? Not sure about that. Is it too bright? Maybe. But I've received zero concepts of what the site should look like.  Feel free to post your own mockup of what the home page should look like (use www.imageshack.us to upload your image and then link to it in the comments here).
  • The Gallery.  I think the new gallery tab should display thumbnails and not just the names of the skins. It's too texty I think. What do you think?
  • Newest. On the skins we think it should say things like <skin name> for <product>. Such as Royale for LogonStudio. Just because experts know what the icon represents doesn't mean the average person will. Also maybe we should list the 20 newest ones instead of 10 since we have the room? What do you think we should do on teh newest page?
  • Popular. Same sort of thing on popular. Should list the top 20 in each category. Skins should again say Project Onx for WindowBlinds.
  • Articles. This is pretty much what we want out of this. Would like to see an index list option that displays the article name, sub-header, author, and date in a nice clean way.
  • Forums. This area will need some more work. We eventually plan to put in moderator suggested bookmarks for popular sub-categories.  For instance, OS Customization would have WindowBlinds, Widgets, IconPackager, and a few other bookmarks so that people can instantly get into those areas.
  • Software. This is pretty much what we had in mind though we would like to make use of Betanews or Downlolad.com's RSS feed to display the latest/greatest stuff in those areas as part of the forum.
  • Sites. This is pretty much what we had in mind. Except it needs to have at the top a way for people who don't have a personal page to get their own personal page.
  • Store. Still is still in development.
  • Library. The Next and Last buttons should be bigger and be of the style like you see for the comments button and download button.

So what are some of the highlights? What is our goal? Well, first off, we want to get the advocacy system working. It still has some kinks (referrals from WinCustomize itself count as an advocacy point but that'll be cleared up soon enough.

Basically the top non-Stardockian advocate each month will get some goodies sent to them. An advocate is someone who goes out onto other sites and links to one of their skins, themes, walls, articles, or whatever.  So if I go out and tell people to check out my RSS widget then every time somone goes to that link it'll give me an advocacy point. And if you click on the referral button, you can see who is linking to it.

Now what about non-skinners? No problem, you'll be able to recommend a skin.  For instance, I'm playing a lot of Halo 2 right now. So as someone who has a personal page, I can go over to TSF's Halo 2. At the bottom, I can "Recommend" the skin for users of my personal page (http://frogboy.wincustomize.com).  So now it adds it to MY recommendations page. I can then go over to the Halo 2 forums and if I happen to see  a discussion that it might make sense to bring it up, and give people this link to my personal page's recommendation link: Halo 2 WMP skin. The Skin author gets an advocacy point and I get an advocacy point. But this way, I've "advocated" the wonderful world of skinning to people who may not have ever thought of skinning their media player.

I think the advocacy feature is going to be a big deal down the line. It also helps that skinners can actually see who is linking to their skins or their website.  If you are a WC subscriber or someone with high access, you can create your own personal page or you can just link to your own skin.

Which is another big thing we've done.  Compare THIS to THIS. Ignore the really long description. Look how much cleaner the new version is.  The old way was ugly to link to because it had too much extra junk in there.  The new site has a mcuh cleaner display.

Or check this out: Compare the way Stardock linked to a skin section: Old WindowBlinds library link. And New WindowBlinds library link. Note that on the right side you see the top authors, skins and forum activity relating to WindowBlinds.  We'll be adding tutorials per section as well shortly.

Speaking of tutorials...If you go to the articles page, you can see that there is now a tutorials area at the bottom left.  It's also one of the channels (or will be) in the Articles tab.  Users can create tutorials now on pretty much anything they want and it will get associated with the proper section. Tutorials can be on skinning or on Photoshop or whatever you want.  So hopefully we'll be able to help users a great deal mroe this way.

Speed.  Hopefully you notice the speed increase. This is all using the same hardware. The only difference is the underlying code which should be much faster.  It will actually get faster as more people use this site instead of WinCustomzie thanks to caching. The problem with caching, however, is that we can't really have per user skins of the site. We can only do it globally. We don't plan to change this in the near future. Sorry. We think speed of site is a higher priority for now.

New Sections.. We plan to add sections for several new programs in the coming weeks. We are de-highlighting certain less active categories including NextStart, ObjectBar, and Dashboard. If more activity occurs in those areas, we'll re-highlight them.  They still exist in the general gallery though, you just have to click on the more button. We currently have 19 highlighted sections. The WindowBlinds section has been renamed Visual styles.  Let us know what you think of that title change.

So that's where we're at.  We need your help in feedback. Please be constructive in any criticism since bear in mind, we are spending massive time and effort on this. Be gentle. ;)  And have fun!

Homepage
- please no mini thumbnails...too hard/small to see and they take longer to load than text (think dial-up users...we're still out there).
- newest additions...since the mouseover on the icon tells you what it is, I think it should read skin by Artist
- Daily Shot/Featured...I would move the newest additions to where the daily shot is now (newest additions to gallery over the gallery...make sense?); Kill the daily shot and in the center column have...Featured Suite, Featured Skin, Featured Artist/Author/Homepage (whatever you'd like to call it)

Gallery
- I agree too "texty" not sexy but how it shows...thumbnails vs. text should be a site configurable setting per user....choose text, light view, or enhanced view (after all you'd be adding 54 images to the page)

Forums
- Needs a "Return to Forum" Button at the bottom of a thread and would like to see it work like the old forum, where you go to where you last viewed the forum.

Overall site is easy to navigate and layed out pretty well I think. Colors are pre-school/nursery (my 8-week old son Patrick's bedroom is the same color as the homepage)

Feedback: The speed improvement is fantastic! I can trade-off customizing the view for the faster page rendering. Increasing the lists of new skins to twenty is good, and thumbnails would help viewers to more easily decide what to checkout, which may reduce the traffic load when the thumbnails act as a filter in finding what appeals to a particular intrest. Having the skin name and associated program will clear up the confusion between a widget and a DesktopX component etc. A better indexing on the forums and articles would be great. Maybe showing how many "recient" comments have been posted (and even better if we could tell if it was a genuine comment and not another "spambot" posting links for Viagra or somthing else useless to a skinning community. I know I'm asking alot on that one! In spite of all I just commented on, I have to say you've done a great job on the new site. (It feels like home)

Homepage: I think the Featured Suite is unnecessarily large. I would prefer it if the "Sponsor" and "WinCustomize Store" were one in the same, and the Featured Suite were moved to the either one of the corners. The rest of the page is organized in a good way, I can't see removing anything from it, all that stuff is important to have on the homepage.

The Colors: To be honest, I haven't liked the sites graphics since day 1. The layout is nice, but the graphics on top of them could do for improvement. My own personal preference is darker colors, but other than that, I wouldn't feel right to say something because I can't do any better myself.

The Gallery: Agreed, thumbnails would look nice there.

Newest: Agreed.

Articles: I like the articles feature, but I have been wondering something. Why, when you post an article on WC, does it show up on JoeUser? Shouldn't it be WC-only?

Forums: I like the forum layout as it is now, but to me, it seems as if the Articles and Forums are both one in the same. I tried making a new thread in one of the forums, and somehow, I ended up posting an article that showed up in the forums, articles and on JoeUser too. It seems very confusing to me, how do you post a forum thread and only forum thread?

Software: That's a cool idea, you could even take it further and get Neowin-like news there.

I like the new site a lot, the only things I don't like are how it's intergrated with JoeUser and the Articles/Forums is a bit confusing to post in. The colors could be darker, but that is purely personal preference. Overall, Stardock has done great work with the site, I have noticed it's much faster going from page to page. I'll be very much looking foward to December 7th!

I like the new site.

Thumbnail and skin is for tag lines is a great Idea!

For the site as a whole I like the layout, but it would be nice to be able to change the color scheme at will.

I don't like the Idea of WB skins being called visual styles. that makes me think StyleXP or Dll hacks for some reason....

Forgot this, Everytime I look at something in the forums it's now asking me to load the japenese charecter set?

GREAT idea with the tutorials, perphaps I shall create a few The feature will definitely help the rookies to the skinning world.

I agree with Hus...I'd like to know that when I'm reading/posting forum posts and/or trying to help folks out, that I'm on WC and not JoeUser. If I want to post an article on JoeUser, I'll go there to do so. A better separation of articles vs. forum posts maybe

I like the idea of articles showing up on Wincustomize, XPthemes and Joeuser but, I also support seperation of the sites. Making forum posts from Wincustomize show up on JoeUser just doesn't seem right, however it is nice to see articles written for joeUser showing up on Wincustomize....

I would like to see the option when submitting an article or forum post to specify where it will show up.

Here's my 2 cents. First off, I think there should be previews of items anywhere that you can possibly do so. Even if it's just small little ones. This would save me from even bothering to click on a link to an item that is say, pink, for example. (Nothing against pink, I just don't want anything pink.) There should be at least 20 items listed on the newest items section, because as the site gets more and more popular, that column will change more rapidly... and some items could be on and off the list before we even log on and see it. Name of item, program it's for and artist name should all be there. example... "GT3 for Windowblinds by Tiggz". Also, I may just be missing it somewhere, but I haven't seen a way on this site where you can tell when a new comment has been added to one of your skins like you can on the old site with the little mail icon. This is very important to me, as I'm sure to other artists, because I like to thank everyone for their comments. And for artists who have hundreds or more items, it's a hell of a task to go clicking on every one of them to check for new comments. And finally, I think the peach color on the home page has got to go. That's all from me! Otherwise fantastic site. I love how it's set up.

Give us a mock up. Otherwise it's likely to stay as it is.

I really like the Universe Metal colors, I've used that site scheme on the old WC for as long as I've had access to it. I would love something along those lines.

How about making the side sections collapisible? Is that possible?
That could mean the user could tidy up the site a little to how they want it.

Just a thought.

Home Page: personally I think it is one too many columns. The one on the right could most be eliminated.

Colors: they have seemed to improve some since I first checked out the beta, admittedly I have not checked it out all that much. Though I agree with Jafo that there is too much white. I have used themes for WC.com that have little white. I don't care for something too dark, but the white is glaring. I think a grey tone is perfect and easier on the eyes.

Gallery: I find the gallery useless since the name is a misnomer. A gallery generally means things on display, and there is only text and icons on display there. Of course larger images would mean a much slower loading page for some, it would work better as intended.

Newest and Popular: agree on change mentioned

Overall the site is a big improvement. It still seems somewhat slower because its loading everything up and then displaying it. Where before it loaded and displayed at the same time. (using Firefox)
I slightly bemoan the loss of being able to personalize the site somewhat with skins, but fast is good.

I don't like the white. I saw somewhere on WC a mock up by Jafo. It was no big deal, just changed the white. It was in the same colours this site is using. And much easier on the peepers.
I think the name (Visual Styles) has an all encompassing feel to it. Like there is more than just WB's in there. Whereas (Window Blinds) says what it is.
Froggy, What jafo and I are saying is:

Leave things they way they are but, change the white from 255,255,255 to say 245,245,245 to get rid of the eye strain caused by the bright white. I don't think that this needs a mock up to understand.

Fair enough Since no one else has, I'll give it a go. Already have an idea, just need to put it on paper.

1. Home page is OK.

2. Personally I think the colours don't matter but it's too bright.

3. Yes, show thumbnails.

4. Yes, I agree.

5. Yes, I agree.

6. This seems OK.

I think there will be a lot more suggestions once there is only one site.

Why in the world would you want to change the catagory WindowBlinds to Visual Styles? It is after all, what it is! It fells unrecognizable to me. If you must, use both.

Agreed with Hus.

2. Shades are too bright. Can't they be made a little dull. or integrate WB Skin in use?

3. A. Tumbnails will look great

B. I think it would be better to give top 5 of each software on main page. The rest can be seen by clicking on the respective icon/text i.e.
WindowBlinds (Click to Get FULL Listing)
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

4. The same can be repeated for Newest.

5. Agreed.

I am with HUS Again.

7. It will great feature.

Some Suggestions from my side:

1. Why not to add "Private Messeging" feature???
2. Add some new titles. Those Sirs, Ladies, Citizens etc etc have become so Old that they can be said Goodbye.
3. Add some new smilies. They have become now borring and feel "Life Less."
4. Update "Preimium Suites."

(Sorry for My Poor English)
