WinCustomize 2K5 Roll-out: Phase 3

WinCustomize 2K5 Roll-out: Phase 3

Open Beta

December 7 approaches. That's the official date that WinCustomize 2K5 replaces the old WinCustomize.com.

We still have features to implement of course. But hopefully things are coming down to the final stretch. So what do we have left to do before launch? Lots of things but here are some things we're struggling with:

  • The home page. We are still worried that the home page is too busy. Too intimidating to a casual user. Should we get rid of the right column? Or left column? Should we have the newest additions be replace by a mini-thumbnail view of some recent or popular skins? Should we combine the daily shot and the featured skin together? Or is it fine as it is?
  • The Colors. We're not sold on the colors of the new site.  Tangerine for the home page? Not sure about that. Is it too bright? Maybe. But I've received zero concepts of what the site should look like.  Feel free to post your own mockup of what the home page should look like (use www.imageshack.us to upload your image and then link to it in the comments here).
  • The Gallery.  I think the new gallery tab should display thumbnails and not just the names of the skins. It's too texty I think. What do you think?
  • Newest. On the skins we think it should say things like <skin name> for <product>. Such as Royale for LogonStudio. Just because experts know what the icon represents doesn't mean the average person will. Also maybe we should list the 20 newest ones instead of 10 since we have the room? What do you think we should do on teh newest page?
  • Popular. Same sort of thing on popular. Should list the top 20 in each category. Skins should again say Project Onx for WindowBlinds.
  • Articles. This is pretty much what we want out of this. Would like to see an index list option that displays the article name, sub-header, author, and date in a nice clean way.
  • Forums. This area will need some more work. We eventually plan to put in moderator suggested bookmarks for popular sub-categories.  For instance, OS Customization would have WindowBlinds, Widgets, IconPackager, and a few other bookmarks so that people can instantly get into those areas.
  • Software. This is pretty much what we had in mind though we would like to make use of Betanews or Downlolad.com's RSS feed to display the latest/greatest stuff in those areas as part of the forum.
  • Sites. This is pretty much what we had in mind. Except it needs to have at the top a way for people who don't have a personal page to get their own personal page.
  • Store. Still is still in development.
  • Library. The Next and Last buttons should be bigger and be of the style like you see for the comments button and download button.

So what are some of the highlights? What is our goal? Well, first off, we want to get the advocacy system working. It still has some kinks (referrals from WinCustomize itself count as an advocacy point but that'll be cleared up soon enough.

Basically the top non-Stardockian advocate each month will get some goodies sent to them. An advocate is someone who goes out onto other sites and links to one of their skins, themes, walls, articles, or whatever.  So if I go out and tell people to check out my RSS widget then every time somone goes to that link it'll give me an advocacy point. And if you click on the referral button, you can see who is linking to it.

Now what about non-skinners? No problem, you'll be able to recommend a skin.  For instance, I'm playing a lot of Halo 2 right now. So as someone who has a personal page, I can go over to TSF's Halo 2. At the bottom, I can "Recommend" the skin for users of my personal page (http://frogboy.wincustomize.com).  So now it adds it to MY recommendations page. I can then go over to the Halo 2 forums and if I happen to see  a discussion that it might make sense to bring it up, and give people this link to my personal page's recommendation link: Halo 2 WMP skin. The Skin author gets an advocacy point and I get an advocacy point. But this way, I've "advocated" the wonderful world of skinning to people who may not have ever thought of skinning their media player.

I think the advocacy feature is going to be a big deal down the line. It also helps that skinners can actually see who is linking to their skins or their website.  If you are a WC subscriber or someone with high access, you can create your own personal page or you can just link to your own skin.

Which is another big thing we've done.  Compare THIS to THIS. Ignore the really long description. Look how much cleaner the new version is.  The old way was ugly to link to because it had too much extra junk in there.  The new site has a mcuh cleaner display.

Or check this out: Compare the way Stardock linked to a skin section: Old WindowBlinds library link. And New WindowBlinds library link. Note that on the right side you see the top authors, skins and forum activity relating to WindowBlinds.  We'll be adding tutorials per section as well shortly.

Speaking of tutorials...If you go to the articles page, you can see that there is now a tutorials area at the bottom left.  It's also one of the channels (or will be) in the Articles tab.  Users can create tutorials now on pretty much anything they want and it will get associated with the proper section. Tutorials can be on skinning or on Photoshop or whatever you want.  So hopefully we'll be able to help users a great deal mroe this way.

Speed.  Hopefully you notice the speed increase. This is all using the same hardware. The only difference is the underlying code which should be much faster.  It will actually get faster as more people use this site instead of WinCustomzie thanks to caching. The problem with caching, however, is that we can't really have per user skins of the site. We can only do it globally. We don't plan to change this in the near future. Sorry. We think speed of site is a higher priority for now.

New Sections.. We plan to add sections for several new programs in the coming weeks. We are de-highlighting certain less active categories including NextStart, ObjectBar, and Dashboard. If more activity occurs in those areas, we'll re-highlight them.  They still exist in the general gallery though, you just have to click on the more button. We currently have 19 highlighted sections. The WindowBlinds section has been renamed Visual styles.  Let us know what you think of that title change.

So that's where we're at.  We need your help in feedback. Please be constructive in any criticism since bear in mind, we are spending massive time and effort on this. Be gentle. ;)  And have fun!

Change it back to WindowBlinds, that is what the product is called.

OK, here are my gripes about the new homepage. All of these stem from the fact that when I hit WC I'm looking to get to the libraries, and maybe see the newest news stories.

1) As others have said lose the right column. If those sections are important don't lose it but make it perhaps a strip of images of the latest skins, the text is just ugly and easy to miss right now.

2) On the left side lose or move the Sponsor/Daily shot/ and Search items. Like I said, I want to see the libraries and now at 1600X1200 with the browser taking up approximately 70% of my screen I have to scroll to get to the libraries because of these items and that is just nasty.

3) Featured Suite.... Lose it, at most it should be an item that rotates like the top of the right column.

4) Newest additions, maybe make this 3 columns of 3 items so that it's not so tall. currently it just takes up too much real estate for something that I personally don't care that much about.

I realize that some of these items are your marketing efforts and what not but let's face it, I bought the products and I bought a WC membership so I don't want to be marketed to. If I want it, I'll buy it. Post about it in a news item, put it in as a rotating add somewhere where it's not hogging space from something that I visit this site to see and I'll be fine. Since we can no longer customize our own site displays these changes are far more important than they would have been on the old site because I can see myself visiting and buying less if I feel that every time I visit this site I have to dig through all the latest marketing efforts just to see what new WB skins or IP packages are available. Now, I would definitely keep these items in the fore-front for the non-member version, but it's just too much as it is.

Just my .02!

Quick q,

On the My Skins tab.. where do i upload a NEW item??

Things are looking GREAT! - i LOVE haing the My Skins info back, and all the details of it. One suggestion, can you have a email notice sent to me when someone comments on one of my skins? That way i can get back to them quicker, thanks for everything!

I have to agree about the front page being too crowded. New skins etc. have their own tabs so showing them on the front as well just adds to the clutter. Likewise with newest articles. Perhaps a summary list, if that.

Thumbs in the New and Popular tabs would help a lot as well. I don't want to preview everything listed to get a look at the skin.

Articles and particularly Forum posts could be a little easier to navigate. As someone said, it would be helpful if clicking on a thread would take you to the last read message like the old WC would make reading easier. I notice that returning to the forums tab doesn't always update the read/unread icons either.

The white is a bit bright. Perhaps just a little off-white as TasT suggests.

It's just getting better & better though!

Forums: I like the forum layout as it is now, but to me, it seems as if the Articles and Forums are both one in the same. I tried making a new thread in one of the forums, and somehow, I ended up posting an article that showed up in the forums, articles and on JoeUser too. It seems very confusing to me, how do you post a forum thread and only forum thread?

When creating a forum post there is an option that allows you to also post it to your personal site(as an article). By default this option is turned on.  And the same is true for creating an article from your personal site, there is an option to also post it to the forums.  To help fix the confusion factor we have turned those options off by default now.  So if you want to have something posted as an Article and a Forum Post you will have to check the option on.  This should help.

Anyone feel like volunteering making new smilies for us? Send me an email. ([email protected]).

Thanks for all the suggestions.  We are going over them and will be implementing some of them. Keep the suggestions coming!

you have spent many hours on this site it is a credit to you and staff and so easy to negociate . what a fantastic layout you have achived cant wait to go on 7 dec thank you , mr fudoshi

i think you should leave the web page as is and just add some updated graphics to it...the format works....why fix it....ive been using wincustomize for well over 3 yrs
Reply #33 Top

You mean using the CURRENT WinCustomize and just "Changing the graphics"? No. That wouldn't work at all.

Here's why:

1) We want to start having tutorials more integrated into the site.

2) We want to allow people to contribute articles and such to the site.

3) We want the overall site to be cleaner.  People who just want skins don't want to have it cluttered with 50 other things on the site.

4) The forum system on the current site is primitive. There's no way for people who just want to talk about a particular thing to focus on that part.

5) Skin authors don't currently get enough kudos for their hard work.

6) We want to allow users to have their own personal pages and for their content to get out.

7) Look how much easier reading article is now than the old site. Before it was squashed between 3 columns. The old site was very hard to navigate for new users.

The home page.

I like the way the layout is.

The Colors.

I would like to see some darker colors as well. A color manger would be nice.

The Gallery.

I like the thumbnail view, but maybe a choice for people who don't want it.

Newest.

Listing the product name is a great idea.

Articles.

I would like to see a preview feature before actually posting an article. I posted my first article today and I would have liked to preview it before I posted it.

Forums.

I also like the bookmark idea, but I'm still not sure if I like the forums yet. I still would like to see a pm feature to contact other people here instead of trying to find their contact info.

ok here is a VERY simple mockup i have done, as you can see it wasnt very thorough but it gets the message across,
on the site as it is atm, i like the way all the boxes and stuff seem 'inset' with the inner shadow, and the slight grey instead of white works quite well
on my mockup, maybe the light blue is a little too light, and the text colout could be darker than i have it, maybe even black...oh well here:
I like your color combo.  I'll see what we can do.
The toned-down background definitly helped, I'm sitting here with a headach (no sympathy please) and I could feel the darker colors take some of the strain off. Two thumbs up!

Just have a few quick things, get rid of the right column
it makes the page look to cluttered and the middle section looks swashed.
I don't like the new my skins section for few reasons, there should be another button or
something saying submit new skin and having a delete button next to update, second of
all i do not like how it it has an envelop next to all the skins this is so annoying becuase it has it next to the
skins that have no comments.

But overall a much cleaner and nicer webpage.

I agree with Jafo....too much white & also small thumb pics are a MUST to eleminate unwanted designs! Great work over here however! Thx for the chance to post something!:D:D

Inspired by the original site's Ice Theme. It uses much less graphics than the original, probably less than the new site's skin, yet has user friendly colors from a previous theme to tie-in the old with the new. Perhaps giving the site some identity, much like devART has with it's color palette...(Jafo...Two Words...No White )

This is very appealing to the eyes, being a neutral color it shouldn't clash with most of the WB skins we use.

Ok I've a fair way to give everyone something they want - but it is not easy!
A lot of websites are going to a feature which allows you the user to design his or her own web page to the liking of the user.

As at MSN - my MSN and Yahoo. Thus everyone gets the content of their choosing and the desired colors or theme that suits them completely.

Hey just a thought and it may cost a bunch of cash - but I bet there is a way to raise such funds and a way to do just the following.
Count on me to help in this feature - if it is added or not. Count on me anyway - Stardock /Wincustomize is the best art site in The Net World and my hopes are that it will become even more than that too!

I'd love to give more info or that is in put to the subject - but I believe the best solution to everyones problem is by giving them a way to solve it themselves. That and let them have exactly just what they want. Now I do agree there has to be a set format to use for just that format to solve problems. If they occur!

So lets figure it some more and hey if it cost more - then we will pay more for it too! So will others that are new to WC/Stardock also. But only if it is worth it to them? Bad question I feel - but a frustrating thought to consider!

Go WC/Stardock!

A quick and very simple example of a non-white colour scheme that will be less tiring to look at for any real length of time.

Reduced glare and contrast.....leaving the focus on/for the skins themselves....

Essencay's is neutral and excellent, as is Suriken's....which is similar in motivation to mine.

Note...it was done on 1st of Nov.....and posted on the admin board for perusal.

All that's 'necessary' is that the site does not become painfully intrusive and diminish the browsers' enjoyment of the content...

Great Job guys! We are considering your ideas and again, thanks to everyone who have taken the effort and posted ideas! Excellent job!

I like the layout, but I dislike the colors. Perhaps an option to just change the colors would be nice. anyway here is an itty bitty mock up of just a little part:

My simple mock. With this it is easy for me to make color choices! Also notice how I eliminated the right column junk. I forgot to put in community, but you get the idea.

I think the new look is great, but the thing I don't like is that you're only showing five skins per page and there is no way.
The catalogs of the different groups are too vast for only five items per. page, unless this is only a demo. People are talking
about speed to me that has never been a problem because I had my system built to be fast, so I never have had major downloading
problems. Once again I do like this new pastel look.
