Game crashes consistently within 30 seconds of starting.

Hi,
I'm new to the community but I have a serious issue that I need help resolving. I just purchased GalCiv2 Gold Edition today but, alas, I cannot play because the game crashes to my desktop with Windows telling me that it simply "stopped working". I will post my debug.err file for your review. I have read the other threads that I could find about game crashes and none of the solutions offered therein fixed the problem. Please help!

(Just FYI, I am running 2 Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT's in SLI...didn't see that in the debug)

Others have been having problems with 8500/8600 cards as well, and it's being looked into. One user reported that disabling planet textures in the game's options alleviated the problem, so give that a shot.

My new card is an Nvidia 7600 GT - AGP slot

I upgraded my SiS AGP drivers from ECS who made my mother board and got the latest drivers from Nvidia. I need this to get Darwinia to work properly.

Don't see what's up with DA.

The only setting I changed in the escape-key-menu was anti alias from 1 to 2

What versions of windows and nVidia drivers are you using? As you've got an entirely different card, it's likely a different issue.



To the others, if planet textures don't do it for you, all I could say is try disabling ALL of the troubleshooting/performance options, and see if it still does it. If that helps, enable them one by one and see if you can narrow things down. Meanwhile I'll poke the devs about this and see if we've heard anything from nVidia yet.

I disabled all of the troubleshooting/performance options like you suggested, kryo. That seems to have solved the problem of the gratuitous crashing. The game is very bland though with blank, grey balls for stars and planets...and no textures to speak of really. I am currently enabling the options one by one to see if I can narrow it down. Let me know if you find out how to fix the problem permanently, and thank you for all of your help. :D

Note the same driver covers FX, 6, 7 and 8 series chips. It still crashes in DA

I _did_ find something else that crashed with the previous driver, a screen saver.
It crashed in a very similar way.

This new driver fixed the screen saver crash. DA now crashes differently.

With the old driver I got buffer flipping errors and device lost in my Debug.ERR
I'm not seeing that, now.

This time I got different corruption of the screen too. I had a green research crystal that was being rendered in a corrupted, exploded fashion, all over the screen.
I watched it spin a couple of times then it locked up the whole machine.

With strange errors regardless of driver, and in various programs, it points towards your case possibly being a hardware issue. Is your power supply sufficient to power the video card, and is it properly seated and connected? If so, your new card could be defective.

I am having a very similar problem to what everyone is reporting here as well. I have just come back to the game and since then have upgraded my machine.

Within around 10-30secs of starting a new game - the system crashes. It starts with a series of with greenish looking parallel lines appearing on the game screen requiring the system to be rebooted. It seems to only happen when on the 3d map.

I had lost one of the original cd-roms and downloaded the game entirely from stardock central. The game was installed correctly and it did not report any problems during the installation but I was wondering if maybe that could have something to do with it. I couldn't find any repair option but maybe there is a checksum some where to verify the installation?

I have the latest motherboard/display drivers from nvidia. I have the ram speed etc set to below optimal settings and installed all the multi-core patches and workarounds suggested on one of the other forum threads. As suggested in the earlier thread - I disabled all graphics options (get the grey looking planets) and I am still having problems (with this game - no problems whats so ever with anything else). I can't think of anything else to try?

I don't get any useful error messages in the debug.err log because the machine gets fried straight after it happens and there are no additional log entries. However this is the hardware I am running with:

I'm fairly certain that my card is getting enough power.


The new card is playing Supreme Commander perfectly!
That's about all it's playing perfectly.
Supreme Command has an NVidia "How it's meant to be be played" logo BTW.


I'm still not certain if the card its self is OK.

I ordered an ATI one and requested a return on the NVidia but the ATI was so crap I'm planning on sending that back instead.

Just curious, if you start the game up but let it just sit at the main menu, does it still crash eventually? Or only when attempting to start a game?

No it is only on the 3d map - main menu or any of the other displays works fine.

I have tried downloading a new client and disabling/reducing everything i can including video and sound. It is only with this game that this is happening with (Oblivion etc are ok) - it is semi-random when it happens but always within 30 secs of start.

I also have a GT8600 equivalent chipset, as part of a Toughbook 52, and I am getting a very similar crash, sometimes a blue screen of death. This is only happening when there is a visual renderer, the main menu and other screens are fine. The funny thing is, on my old laptop with just a cheepie intel graphics chipset - that could hardly run Morrowind - This game worked fine. I am really looking forward to Twilight, so I hope there is a fix for this problem! Here's my Error log:

AHHHH! It happened again! Some kind of false parameter or something. I'm just going to play Dwarf Fortress until there is a fix for this!

AAAAAND I cleared the error log when I posted it, and NOW nothing was written to it. NOTHING! GAHHHHH!

PTTG, your debug shows that you exited the game normally - not that it crashed in any way. That debug.err looks like you simply opened the game, then exited.

How can that be of any use in finding a fault?

I had been crashing fairly regularly but now it is not as often. For some reason, I decided to check for an upgrade for my Athlon 64 X2 and found out they had sneaked in a new optimizer. The newest I found was August 2007. Give that a try. It seems to have helped me.

I suspected that the log was not going to be helpful, I just wasn't sure. Also, what I meant was there is no new error log appearing when the game crashes. I cleared the log completely as soon as I posted it here so I could see if it was updated. Then, although the game started up, started a new game, and I played for several turns before the crash, there was nothing written to the log.

Now, judging from the reports here, it sounds like the problem is:
-Drivers for Nvidia GT-series need an update
-Overheating? Not likely, but possible
-Grues
-Some other hardware problem, possibly dual-core somethingorothers.

I am going to try checking for drivers, does anybody know the best place to look for an intel-based chipset?

Ok, I checked around, and I have the most recent version of the drivers for my graphics card. What's the next step?

OK, nothing is being written to the error log unless I shut down the game normaly; the error log apparently doesn't work when there is an error. What I have discovered is that when I did manage to Ctrl-Alt-Del back to windows, there where three error boxes. Unfortunately, two of them had invisible text. The one I could read came up from iFramwrk.exe, saying simply, "The parameter is incorrect." WTGIF? Is there some kind of conflict with iFramwrk? It's a Wi-Fi controller, so I don't see why that would do anything. I am going to try shutting that down first, and seeing if I can't get GC to crash.

Edit: Well, it turns out the other boxes where saying that several of my other programs had crashed, and they all mentioned one memory space or another 0x00000024, can't write, and so on. This is simply boggling my mind.

OK, What I discovered is that the error log only gets written to from DA, while I have been trying to run DL.
Let's see if we can, maybe, get this same error in that chapter and I'll get back to you. And before anyone says it, no, I do have about 2-3 Gb of Virtual Memory, and the latests drivers.
