Chopping Gameplay + Messed UP Graphics "HELP"

HELP PLEASE.

Ok ive just brought Galactic Civilations Gold edition in the last few days. Ive allready played Dread Lords with no problems at all.

So i decided to play Dark Avatar, so i started a new game everytime i start a game no matter what graphic settings i set the options to high or low the framerate goes choppy on the main map and it stall's all the time and then after a while the graphics all get messed up and i have to quit the game and restart, just for this to do it again and this usually happens after a few turns.

I dont have a good system however i do have a decent system to play the game without the terrible gameplay issues. I have the lastest nividia drivers 93.71 for my graphics card. I play dread lords and get nothing like this at all. I think it some sort of bug or texture error which slows down the gameplay and makes the graphics go upside down.

My system specs are

Althon XP 1800
1 Gig Ram
Geforce 4 ti 4600 128 meg grapgic card.
Windows XP Professional Edition.

Ive checked my system to make sure everything is set right to play this game but ive ONLY just brought this game for what i cannot play it. Please sort this problem please i managed to get my lass to buy this game for me and if she finds out it does not work right she will kill me.

No virtual memory message however a few times i get a message on my desktop when DA crashes that my nvidia display driver has changed resolution and i have to reboot to get my resolution back.

I will try turning things down and using a smaller map like you said and c if thats happens maybe your right with the texture memory. however ive got to pick my daughter up from school and i dont have time at the moment i will try this out later and get back to you on this matter.

Well, it could be a driver issue.  We did change some of the ship textures to use larger textures, but more of the ships are sharing textures, so it shouldn't be a problem.  If you e-mail me your debug.err, the screenshots, and the exact text of the message, I can forward it to my contact at NVidia to see if he can determine if it's a bug in the drivers.

Ok its still doing it ive change down the size of the map, my opponents, ive got rid of a number of things like the star background and it still gets the graphics corrupted although which was different from before it took alot longer before the graphics messed up this time. I will e-mail my debug file my screenshots however i dont have the message to do with the nvidia error message it did not come up this time my computer automically reset itself instead and rebooted.

If this is the case. it may have attempted to generate a 'Blue Screen of Death'. Please go to Control Panel->System Properties->Advanced tab->Startup and Recovery Settings and uncheck 'Automatically restart'.

If your computer then does the same thing again while playing, it may crash to a blue screen. If this happens, write down the error message listed near the top in all caps, the hexadecimal numbers at the bottom of the screen (four groups beginning with 0x), and the affected file, if it gives one.

BSODs are generally a result of a hardware or driver issue, and that information can help figure out what sort of problem it is.

The thing is and this puzzles me i dont get any problems with Dread Lords nothing at all not even any lag and im using gigantic map size max opponents 4x antialiasing, max stars and planets and it runs fine. Come to Dark Avator and World War 3 starts lol.

Also, set your computer to create minidump files so that we can send it to NVidia.

Right click my computer->properties->Advanced->Startup and recovery.
Click the settings button under 'Startup and recovery'.

The mindump files are saved by default to c:\windows\minidump
Also, you should turn off the 'Automatically restart' option when there's a system error.

Might have to give me a few days until i can get my system to crash again like. I played dark avator last night with messed up graphics for about 30 minutes "just plain selecting options and doing random things" I was hoping my system would crash and it did not in the end i gave up as it was late. I will try again soon.

Ok ive been trying for days to get a error report and i finally got 1 i only manages to get 1 screenshot before it dispeared hope this helps. Like i said Dread lords works fine been playing it for ages as for Dark Avator theres something seriously wrong somewhere. I you need any more info please tell me.

Oh by the way i could not get a blue screen of death just these microsoft error reports.

Sean,

Well less blue screens are generally a good thing.

If you install SmartException from here:

https://www.stardock.com/products/smartexception

it will generate a report when DarkAvatar crashes which you can send in to us.  These reports can help us determine if you're seeing a driver error or some other error that is causing the graphics distortion and crashing.

Ok Cari my system crashed again "not a surprise" I have a exception log using Smartexception "which you told me" and ive e-mailed it to you.

What happened this time is after a few minutes playing Dark Avator the graphics messed up then my system just crashed back to desktop an mircosoft error report came up again i quit out of that and found the log file in smartexception and emailed the ZIP file to you.

I hope I am not thread jacking, but I am having the same problems.
I am also getting low virtual memory.

I also have the latest nvidia drivers. I hope this image helps anyone and everyone.

edit: it has not crashed on me yet, but the frame rates are low, and images get all funky like the above link.

I don't know if I have exactly the same problem, but I am also having problems with the graphics corrupting. I am currently working through the Dark Avatar campaign. Things start out fine. There are a few pauses as stuff is loaded off the hard drive since I am low on system memory, but nothing that really bothers me. Then, usually after a battle, all of the graphics except for the most basic parts of the user interface start flickering. This includes planets, stars, ships, names, but so far not the icons that get used when zoomed out. The items in the tech tree (not the list but the tree at the bottom) are also affected. After I continue to try to play, the entire top half of the screen goes black, except for what is immediately around the pointer. It will occasionally return for a moment when I change screen, but then it goes black again.

After this happened the first few times I reinstalled both DL and DA including all of the patches. It did not solve the problem. I must also point out that several of the DL patches have backfired. I did not have any problems with the turn button, minimap, or the timeline until after downloading the patch that was supposed to solve the problem.

This is the debug.err from the latest occurrence of the problem. This time the program hung on exit and I had to put the computer into sleep mode to get back to the desktop and kill it.

They are the most current drivers available for my system that I can find. I went to the ATI site and found my board on their drivers page. There were what looked like newer drivers, but I can't download them. I start the process and they download a checker program which looks at my system and then says:

"Thank you for your interest in CATALYST

Unfortunately, this software update cannot be installed on your system. Please contact your notebook manufactuer for driver updates"

I go to the dell website to check there and I find that I have the newest version available, dated 8/16/2005.

blacklite, (mcdjfp you might find this useful as well)

To increase the amount of Virtual Memory available to Windows:
 
1) Right click on the My Computer icon and chose properties
2) Click on the advanced tab
3) Under performance, click on the Settings button.
4) Click on the advanced tab
5) Click on the change button
6) Change the initial size to the recommended size and then increase the maximum size.
 
As a note, you should make sure that you have enough hard drive space left for the maximum virtual memory size or you'll start having problems whenever Windows has to allocate more virtual memory. You can get the size of the virtual memory in gigs by dividing the number by 1024.

I've managed to solve my problem at least for the moment. The flickering problem went away after I turned the Throttle Frame Rate option off. The problem with the top half of the screen went away after I turned Anti-Aliasing completetly off.

They might return on larger maps or later in the game, but for now this seems to work.

I will try the page file size change.

FYI, Some of the flickering and stuff went away after I turned throttle franme rate off and INCREASED AA to 1x or 2x.

However, my regular games are still a little choppy; also, I have never had a problem with the original game (aka not Avatar).
