Ships range

One of the problems I've always seen with the game is that your ships range was SO huge. I hadn't played in awhile and now that DA is out I fired up the game and... noticed that my ships have a range almost half the map on gigantic! That's from the begining with just the basic ship range!

Sense Gigantic is the biggest map we can get how would I go about lowering the ships range so you actually have to research it 100% to get a quarter of the galaxy if you just have 1 system left?

You could try modding all races to have a range penalty, or possibly create a tech with a range penalty and give it to everyone to start.

I was thinking about lowering the range value in the racesconfig file but after seeing them at 0 I gave up that idea. Didn't think that I could give it a negative value. I'll give that a shot, thanks for the reply.. I didn't think about adding in a tech, I'll try that one to.

I'm perlexed now. I first changed every race to have range -10, then didn't see a change so went down to -500 and there was still no change in how far my ship could go. Tried putting in a tech with -100 and gave it to everyone and no change...

I'd like to see this changed too. The ranges are a bit drastic. Are you sure your modded file is the one being loaded?

It's the one in galciv2\DarkAvatar\Data\English so unless the game is loading a differant one then I'm pretty sure. I was thinking that I was editing the backups I made but doesn't look like it.

It's been awhile sense I played a long game so it might work like this, but this is what I'm looking for. Ships range is very low at start but as you train in the life support tech line it increases alittle but the life support ship componants add to the ships range. Would be pretty cool if I can get it to work like that, you'd actually have to put life support on ships, I remember from before I rarely would put them because it wasn't worth it and right now it looks totaly worthless to have any of the life support componants.

Ok, go a new idea I'm working on. Setting it so the life support techs give only a small amount of range (5,10,15,and 20). Then to add to it I'm going to increase the life support componants slightly to make them worth while... I'll test it out as soon as I find the file that has the componants and their abilities.

You shouldn't be editing the default files. Copy them to a folder in the mod folder and edit them there. Then when you launch the game, go to options, select use mods and select your mod. You will need to start a new game to notice the effects.

Hmmm... ok, that might be why. I'll do that... ummm... where's the mod folder?
It should be in GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\Mods. I don't have DA, but I expect it will be there.

Where I assumed it would be to, but it wasn't. The default that the game was looking for mods was in the same area, so I added the folder and.... Nothing. They aren't working even in there so maybe someone forgot the line of text and tells the game to actually LOOK and use the files in that folder... I don't know.

Im still playing DL and i havn't noticed range as being an issue?

I only notice it when i suddenly find i cannot go somewhare, apart from that,
It is not really somthing you think about, except that you can sell the life support technology freely to the AI without worrying about it helping them out!

I forgot. You have to add a ModDescription.xml in mods\yourmodfolder. Just copy one from another mod you may have and edit it.

Yup, no go. Where should the file go within the mods folder?

All files you copy from Data\English should go in Mods\Yourmodfolder\Data.
Hmmm.... that's where I got them. Was hoping I had them in the wrong place. I'm very perplexed.

Make sure that the mod folder setting in My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar\prefs.ini points to the location you're putting them in--it may not by default.

...and... that would be the point of this thread... thanks for helping out... :o)

It's pointing to C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\Mods\My Changes which is where the file is in.

you're hilarious. so oddly, but kindly, off the mark.

we WANT it to figure into the game in a more bothersome manner so it MATTERS..

get it now?

You should use quotes... i assume your talking about my post rite?? since i cannot see any other posts that could possibly fit, even if your comment dousn't seem to apply to me in any logical way??

i don't see what i said that is off the mark?

Shit, I only posted some details about how range affects my game (it practically dousnt). How you fix that is another topic i was not currently commenting on.

How about this, we all stop bickering here? I stated why I see it as a problem. I don't care about your little soap oprea, take it to private messages or something and let this thread get back to normal.

I got my range mod to work.

First I created three folders (the ones in bold):
C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\Mods\RangeFix\Data

Secondly, I copied the RaceConfig file and put it in this directory (the one in bold):
C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\Mods\RangeFix\Data

Next, I opened RaceConfig and set all the races range to -150 (except for the Dread Lords since they're supposed to be super advanced). With this value, on the first turn of the game (in a Large galaxy) my Colony ship has a range of 1.2! It may seem too low, but remember that range is extended with Starbases and planets. So range is now a strategic consideration! I really hope the AI can adjust to this change though. I have faith that it can (especially with all the hard work that Brad puts into it).

Lastly, start up DA and go to the Options menu. Make sure 'Use Mods' is enabled and click on the 'Change' button. Make sure that the directory listed here is correct (Since I named my mod's folder 'RangeFix', I had to make sure it said:
C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar\Mods\RangeFix)

You must start a new game for the change to have effect. When you get to the screen where you can customize your race, click on the 'Clear' button at the bottom. This will load the values from the RaceConfig file in your mod's directory, and in the abilities section you will see 'Range -150%'. You may also want to go to this directory: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar and delete all the files with the customracexml extension. This will delete any custom races you have created, but will guarantee that all the races have the 'Range -150%' ability when you start a new game. However, I am not certain that this is necessary (I did it just to be safe). Now you're ready to play. Enjoy.
