Ships range

One of the problems I've always seen with the game is that your ships range was SO huge. I hadn't played in awhile and now that DA is out I fired up the game and... noticed that my ships have a range almost half the map on gigantic! That's from the begining with just the basic ship range!

Sense Gigantic is the biggest map we can get how would I go about lowering the ships range so you actually have to research it 100% to get a quarter of the galaxy if you just have 1 system left?

Well simply adding in one file to the basic mod directory worked for me. -range is nice. Makes the exploration more fun.

Someone should slap it in the library so lazy people like me can do it. I also yearn for MoO-style short ranged ships.

And there is the one step I was missing all day, clearing... now the fun part... rebuilding all of the regular races so they can have the -150 range

I've been messing around with this as well, it works just fine for the player. You need to build outposts on the fringes of your territory in order to send out your ships. I use a special "jump gate" starbase module that lets ships boost extremly fast between pockets of known space.

My problem is I don't think the AI can handle this. Anyone else have any luck with the AI building outposts to extend their range instead of using the now gimped range ship equipment?

Yup someone get this into the library.

Would e nice if we can alter the base files so that all the AI's get this reduced as well. Maybe Frogboy could alter the basic files to reduce range and make it more dependant on technology earned.

Ummm... I don't know what ya'll are looking for. All this does is reduce the distance from your home system that a ship can travel without life support components. AI get's it to, when your on the opponent screen hit edit then clear and it'll add the negative range. I personally use -250, I'm actually thinking about going to -350 right now.

The AI gets the penelty but they don't know how to cope with it. All we are trying to say

If you play a large map, just you and the AI with this range mod you will see the AI struggle. He won't build starbases to extend his range far enough to reach other planets. He just stays local.

I still like it as a concept, and I know DA's new planet types was ment to slow down colony rush, but I still agree with you I think the range is too big for ships.
