In memory of September 11th

In memory of September 11th

A tribute

Five years ago on September 11, 2001, 19 men boarded four planes in the United States with the intention of hijacking them and crashing them into important buildings with the hope of killing as many people as possible.

Three of those planes made it to their targets killing over 3,000 people. The fourth one crashed after passengers attempted to retake the plane after learning the fate of the other three planes.

For Americans, September 11th marked a major turning point for how the country viewed the world. For people outside the United States, the choices and response to September 11th has stirred a great deal of debate.  Even within the United States, there is a great deal of disagreement over how best to continue to carry out the response to the terrorist attacks and the growing movement of violent Islamic radicalism.

The people who attacked the United States were part of a terrorist organization called Al Qaeda. A radical Islamic group dedicated to restoring the historic caliphate that once existed from Spain to the far east, Al Qaeda considered the United States as an obstacle to their goals of turning "moderate" Muslim states such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt into fundamentalist Islamic Republics modeled after then Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. Their belief was that if the US presence in the middle east as well as its support of countries such as Saudi Arabia and Israel could be removed that they moved one step closer to their goal. They believed, wrongly, that the US response would be to withdraw its presence from the middle east just as it had done so in Somalia in the mid 1990s.

On this day, we at this site give our thoughts to the families of the men and women who died on that day. And we support the valiant men and women in the armed forces from the United States and other countries who are working to put an end to organizations and movements that support the indiscriminate wholesale annihilation of innocents.

We hope the world does not forget 9/11.  We certainly will not.

I share the horror and revulsion at the acts of 9/11, as I do at all terrorist acts. My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have lost family members, friends and loved ones.
I do, however, worry when jingoism and narrow-minded bigotry interfere with common sense and understanding.
Citizen Already Taken: Please do not use this as a platform for your own xenophobia; generalisations such as yours are not helpful to anyone.
You seem able to distinguish between ‘good’ terrorists and ‘bad’ terrorists.
As someone who has lived in fear travelling on the London underground and working in the City, whose family had a less-than-happy time living in Belfast during the height of the Troubles, who was worried to go into a pub after the Guildford pub bombings, I find the hypothesis that it’s somehow OK as the ends justify the means, repellent.
Who are these “not-so-violent” mainstream Muslims to which you refer?
Do they (whoever they are) oppose all that is right and good in the world?
I am sure there are many Muslims [indeed I know a good number] who would find that deeply offensive.
“Show them no mercy” – Surely this kind of sentiment is detrimental in all circumstances.
As far as ‘your’ tax dollars go, do I presume that you would rather see the execution of those that oppose democracy rather than ‘waste’ money?

In my humble opinion, a tragedy such as that which occurred on 9/11 cannot be distilled into a simple “they are evil people and should be shown the door to eternal damnation”.

Today is a day for grieving and for prayer, not for sabre-rattling and generalised condemnation.

May your god go with you…

For someone who grew up in Belfast through the 70's and 80's I have lost many friends to terrorists but 9/11 was something that shocked the world out of this belief in "Freedom fighters" and saw terrorists for what they are.
Many people died in the twin towers that were not american so i think this tragedy unites many people, it was a very long 4 hours waiting to hear if my Aunt was ok (shes been living in Manhattan for many years)

Amen to that.

I remember that day vividly... sitting at work across the street from a federal building that was a "threat" in Detroit.  I also remember the several bomb evacuations in the days following that day.  It was a very sad, and traumatic day.  I'm just glad that my cousin wasn't at the Pentagon that day, but my heart still aches for the families that lost someone.

I'm a daughter and wife of former Army soldiers.  So every news report I hear of soldiers leaving, dying, and coming home, hits me hard.  I still get the feeling in the pit of my stomach as if it was my loved one.  I also now have a sister n law that is due to leave for Iraq within the next month.  She's a helicopter medic, and will be traveling with the Navy Seals.  She was one of the first Navy Reserves they were training at Fort Campbell for ground combat.  It's scary for us, but she knows her family stands behind her, and honors her for what she is setting out to do.  I've been saving any story about her that I possibly can, so that my kids can learn to appreciate her, not just as their aunt, but for someone who stands for freedom.

I would like to add my condolences to those that lost their loved ones, on that tragic day 5 years ago.
The whole thing still makes me cry, still to this day.

I thank God that I did not have to be on the radio for this horrible day, like I had to do when the Murrah building in Oklahoma City was attacked. It was the hardest thing for me then...I could not have done this story too.

God Bless America!!!!

FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST, PEOPLE PLEASE WAKE UP. Why don't you do some research, and reading. And by that I don't mean read the "OFFICIAL 9/11 COMMISSION REPORT". That report is full of inconsistencies. I'll leave you with a few tidbits to think about. And I don't want you to think that I'm trying to cause controversy, I'm just a regular guy that is searching for the real truth.

1. The buildings fell 110 stories in 10 seconds. So if you would've thrown a ball out the window of the other building as it was falling it would've hit the ground at the same time as the entire building. Coincidence? The only thing that falls that fast is a building that is imploded by explosives.

2. Marvin Bush (the president's brother) was the head of security up until Sept. 10, 2001

3. There were training exercises with imaginary hijacked jets who were supposedly about to hit the towers that very same morning.

4. Later on that day WTC 7 fell in a nice, neat little pile due to falling debris that caused an internal fire. What was in that building? The government agencies housed at 7 World Trade Center were the United States Secret Service, the Department of Defense, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management, the Internal Revenue Service Regional Council (IRS), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). That building was owned by Mr. Larry Silverstein. Oh and there was a multi-billion (that's billion with a "B") insurance on the building. By the way, there's no mention of WTC 7 in the commission's report.

5. A fire fighter radioed in from the 87th. and was quoted as saying "I need 2 hoses up here, we can put this out"..

6. Several witnesses from inside the building said they heard multiple cracks like dynamite going off, and you can see puffs of smoke several stories below the collapsing floors as it's coming down.

7. Recently in the news there was a report stating that the person responsible for gathering the names of the people who were in the buildings at the time of the collapse was working with an outdated list, so there was about 40 people who were thought deceased who were actually never in the building. (THIS FACT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OTHERS BUT YOU WOULD THINK THAT FOR SUCH A MAJOR THING LIKE THIS THEY'D GET THE RIGHT INFO. FIRST)

8. Throughout history there have been only 2 other buildings that have collapsed due to fire, they are WTC 1, and WTC 2. There have been buildings that have burned for more than 24 hours, down to the frame and they have not collapsed. And the towers burned for less than an hour and they collapsed

9. Jet fuel burns at 1300 degrees, steel melts at 2000 degrees, and most of the jet fuel burned off during the initial impact. Watch the video and you'll see the huge fireball (that was jet fuel).....So if the building was not brought down by fire, then what did?

and finally...

10. WHERE IS THE PLANE THAT HIT THE PENTAGON? There were no engines, wings, fuselage, cockpit, landing gear...WHERE WAS IT? You'd think that a plane flying at 500 miles an hour that close to the ground would leave one hell of a big mess.

In concluding I'd just like to reiterate that I am in no way trying to undermine the gov't, or anything like that. I am just a regular joe that wants answers to unanswered questions. And I feel that we deserve them, at least in respect to those who lost their lives on that day. And for those of you who have read this far and lost someone that day, please know that my prayers are with you at this very moment. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Most of what I have to say would be politically incorrect so let me limit my comments to

God Bless America!

and to those non-conscripted soldiers serving in the middle east "GOOD HUNTING!"

PICHIN: it's a good thing America is the way it is and you have the freedom to think and say what you want. And remember, Americans are fighting and losing their lives everyday so that you can be free to be an idiot.

Today is one day we shouldn't worry about politics or conspiracies or arguing. Let's just have a peaceful day to remember that 3000 of our fellow countrymen and women are no longer with us. Is one day out of 365 too much to ask?
A sad day, few days really, of reflection. I am struck recently that there is no stronger argument for peace, to a rational mind, than the brutal horrors of senseless violence. Fanatics know no reason, though; it's hard to debate someone who's expecting eternal blissful reward for what would otherwise be obviously insane behavior in this life. If ideals like equality for women, 100% literacy rate and high-quality secular education, and indeed democracy can be successfully instilled in a society then there is hope for reasoned comprimise.

But until these cultures can pull themselves out of the Middle Ages in their thinking, I fear we'll know little peace.

This is not the face of religion. It is the face of maniacs hiding behind religion.

RPGFX: You've hit it on the head, although Islam IS a religion of war, most followers are peaceful. But, as in every religion, there are radical people who twist it to their own means.

I really cannot believe you called Pichin an idiot...People are fighting so we are free to be idiots? You maybe should re-think that because the people fighting ARE idiots, the average IQ in the Army now is horribly low, this is a war where thousands have died and nothing has been gained, infact we now control iraq and wait..how did the heroin fields get back there? Hmmm.. 9/11 has been proven time and time again with EVIDENCE that is INDISPUTABLE that these "islams" or whatever muslims we want to point our fingers at, did not do it, infact it was your lovely government that planned this entire thing out to scare us into giving our freedoms away for "liberties" Today should be the national day where we remember this as the day our own government REALLY turned against us. Take today out and research the Patriot Act, their own little bill counter-acting the CONSTITUTION saying they can break into your house and take anything at anytime and we basically ALL are terrorists. If you are going to fight me on any of this, I DEMAND evidence. Do not come back at me with some stupid sentence saying "stop the bulls*&t" because that proves NOTHING. If you don't believe me, go look things up, I'm not like your government, I don't give a one sentence explination and then walk off, research everything I say, ask questions, do the homework.

Our own family and friends died today due to our government, what are we going to do?

Debunking 9/11 Myths. It's from Popular Mechanics. They answer your questions.

MadMike25: you anti government statements would get you unwanted retribution in most other countries. You should feel grateful that there are people fighting, no matter you think they are fighting for, so you can say and write the things you do. No matter what you have to say about the government, you have the right to say it because of the young men and women of this great country that are out there doing their job. And that IS what they are doing, by their own choice. It may not be popular, it may not even be right, but their country asked them to do it and they are. So take time out of your ridiculously selfish life, spend the energy you do/did looking into conspiracy theories and just say thank you to a Soldier, Sailer, Airman or Marine. They are Heros. They are doing what you are not willing to do, so how about shutting it!

Link to the Popular Mechanics article debunking the 911 myths.

As an american, I am ashamed of a lot of people posting junk like that on 911. This is a solemn occasion.

I like to think of myself as a 'middle of the road' person in politics, but what happened that day wasn't Republican or Democrat. It affected ALL of us.

I remember my grandfather telling me about how the world stopped at Pearl Harbor, or my dad telling me about the Kennedy assasination and how it changed everyone.

I don't really care what Bush said, or what Clinton didn't do...What happened that day, happened.

Just my $0.02 cents

the average IQ in the Army now is horribly low

What study are you quoting from?

EVIDENCE that is INDISPUTABLE

Where's yours? If you refer to the tripe linked in #20 then your IQ must be horribly low to suck up bullshit like that. Some people believe anything they see as long as it "compliments" their own agenda. They provide no "EVIDENCE" only innuendo and try to "Compare" to something that's NEVER happened before.

go look things up, I'm not like your government, I don't give a one sentence explination and then walk off, research everything I say, ask questions, do the homework.

You gave no proof....no link to any real research.....you just rant and tell us to "go look it up"

I'm going to stop now because after this I'd get personal and that's not allowed.

Forgot this one. Heroin Fields in Iraq. Interesting concept. Where's the proof you speak of.

we now control iraq and wait..how did the heroin fields get back there? Hmmm..
