I only do the daily challenges. I almost never find it beneficial to build an offworld trading company. I managed to shave a sol off the yellow smiley's top time last night by prioritizing the Hacker array verses ALL the other options. ( I know I tried. :( ) Sure the real-time head to head boys get all the fame and glory... but if you really want to see optimal play style try playing against humans who can see what you did and improve on it. Adding more 'stuff' always seems like an improvement... but. Less is usually more. For example. Blues has a video out there where he drives down an opponents stock price by adrenaline boosting that opponent. Its true, I know it. Somehow, Soren's AI remembers me and targets me for sabotage if I try to replay the daily challenge. Of course, it could just be that on subsequent replays I am more efficient and thus run out to a lead faster and thus incur more wrath from the AI's who mistake me for Zultar. Either way, the AI is out to get me, it's out to get you too... Don't say I didn't warn you!

My guess is you asked and answered your question. To build an Ice condenser you need ice. To get a free condenser, you need to be able to build one (i.e. need ice) In case it needs to be stated... not all starts have ice.

Not sure what you consider appropriate protection. The problem could be, that what you consider appropriate protection is.... not... appropriate. ;) As far as I know being relatively new myself.
