I just want to say that Frogboy and Stardock did a tremendous job with Galciv 1, they're doing a great job with Galciv 2 and its expansions. I've experienced the same thing as Astralrunner. There I am, having decimated the pirate defenses,, blasted everything in sight, when lo and behold here comes a full-fledged pirate attack. Of course, it could be fictionally suspected that this fleet was off partying and getting laid at some nearby brothel planet and were suddenly called back. Hiya, While I still enjoy all the Galcivs and am eagerly awaiting the full release of TA and Sins of a Solar Empire, I've come across an excellent turn based strategy game from Cryptic Comet. Armageddon Empires is very much like the old hex-board games with some nifty card units thrown in. It recieved a great review over at The Wargamer, and was developed by a independent developer. I tried the demo and had to buy it (30 bucks). Check it out if such things interest you. <

Short shorts are indeed a very marketable and very effective way to develop their craft. I'll certainly agree that writing in several genres is certainly the way to go. I write about what interests me so I'm all over the irrealism (love that word) spectrum. I very seldom write mainstream as I just don't find the every day world all that intriguing. Novelettes are generally a difficult, though not impossible sell. However, I've often found that the story will dictate its own length. T

Well, I'll stick with my opinion. There's a bit more to the novel than there is to the short story. Success in either involves more than simple basic skills. A successful novel involves a high quality of prose, pacing, characterization, story arc, and a good deal of originality. The most effective way to develop those things is through short stories. I "think" you could submit the fantasy-esque piece and my feeling is that it would be well received on its own qualities. However, I found it advantageous to submit material in the genre. I found the experience well worth it. A lesson both in what constitutes speculative fiction, and the nuts and bolts of writing as a professional. I also have to say that I'm tremendously skeptical about writers who haven't demonstrated the ability to produce short fiction before going on to longer works. That

Why should politeness, courtesy, and intelligent discourse be considered and "ideal" instead of the "normal" way to discuss an issue? However 13 does seem to be the most likely age of many of the members, especially some who feels that age, not manners, not appropriate language, gives them reason to swear at any mild annoyance. "Hell" is a swear word when used as Shadowmaster used it. Nor was it a question that called for it. It's a sad fact that everyday people seem to think profanity is appropriate for every mild annoyance or inconvienence. They over use profanity until in their own ignorance they think it's a normal part of speech. We should all be better than that. Save it for when it matters and in the meantime try to learn to express yourself in an intelligent and appropriate manner.
