Perhaps leave autosupply default to off and implement a button that when turned on, autosupplies everything by default? People who want to micormanage their autosupply can be free to autosupply individual buildings, others who want to buy their supplies on the market can, and those who don't want to focus on that aspect of the game can just use the button. Rather than disabling patents, it might be a better idea to implement a menu with a sliding bar to adjust the amount of water/fuel or water/power used. Market prices for water going through the roof but power stuck at $1 per unit? Drop the slider to 100% power, 0% water used. Bit of an unexpected water shortage because you just bought out an opponent? Adjust it to 75% water/25% fuel until you've got everything under control.
