Thanks for clarifying - at least I now understand the concern. So typing at the desktop highlights an icon - I've been in I.T. for literally 40 years - I retired after 20 years as "the" computer repairman in a small city - and I don't think I've really noticed that until you pointed it out. Not sure if many users take advantage of this to select icons. I still think my suggestion is a good one. You don't have to agree, which is why these things are set up as option

I don't understand your comment at all. When focus is on the desktop itself, typed characters go nowhere. I don't understand what you mean by "..should highlight the next viable icon for your typing." The characters go nowhere, do nothing. Click on a blank spot on your windows desktop then start typing characters -- if you have sound enabled you'll get a windows error sound (on my system it's called "windows background.wav") and that's it, the char
Just an idea: it would be cool if Start11 captured keyboard entries typed when no window has focus (meaning keystrokes just typed at the "Desktop"), and processed those keystrokes as if they were entered into the Start 11 Start Menu "search programs and files" box. Right now those keystrokes just result in a windows error sound and go into the bitbucket. Thanks!!
Thanks for the tip!
Congratulations Stardock -- Start11 v1.0 is a tremendous win, I appreciate you!! /jim ps now figure out a way to kill the new Win11 context menu with the 'Show More Options' thing!!
FYI, I've had some limited success with ensuring that I am "signed in" to Cortana. Because I don't like Cortana, in the past I didn't bother to have it signed in. Signed in seems to help with the lost first character issue :)
Just want to update that this issue remains chronic. I dream of a fix from Stardock!
Sean, the link you posted just takes us back to this same thread.
Oh please. With all due respect, don't give me the "unsupported version" stuff. Today's insider version is tomorrow's release version -- you need to know what's coming and deal with it. I opened a support ticket, and was asked to move my concern to the forum. So I do that, take the trouble, and then you give me "unsupported...". Not helpful. Your years-long customer, jim
Hi. Windows 10 v2004 (OS Build 19613.1000) Start10 v1.93 Video at http://youtu.be/7NfftAsBlyQ?hd=1 In the video, I am typing netsh very quickly - yes -- but definitely hitting the n before the e.
Hello. I can also report the same issue, including in the current beta. The explanation that the first keypress is "waking up Cortana" doesn't seem right, because my experience is that the first letter appears as the SECOND letter when I type quickly. For instance, if I click start and then type netsh ...what appears in the search box is entsh It is never "eating" the
In recent Win10 Insider builds, with Start10 activated the search box on the taskbar is bright white instead of slightly muted gray with black text. Link to a screen grab that illustrates the issue available at https://xxxxxxxx.com/temp/start10sample.jpg Ideas? Thanks.
Just so you know that 1.5 is not a total disaster, it did install just fine for me over the beta a couple hours ago - and appears to be working fine! I'm running the latest Win10x64 Windows Insider edition that was released earlier today. /jim
Hi. It's not a Start10 issue - there's a control panel item that occupies a position despite not being applicable to most/all of us. To get rid of it you have to edit the registry, take ownership of the item, and then delete it. The item is HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{98F2AB62-0E29-4E4C-8EE7-B542E66740B1} ..which translates into a theoretical Control Panel item called "Company Settings Sync" - whatever t
The latest version of Start10 resolved this bug. The clock now appears on the secondary taskbar without issue (for me anyway).
Sadly, my friend, I know exactly how you feel. I got frustrated with a bunch of issues with my Win10 installation, so 24 hours ago I did a wipe hard drive and reinstall, then update, then install software, etc etc etc. Was up till 5am. But there is that satisfaction when all is humming along exactly as it should be!! Best wishes/jim (fellow start10 customer)
As stated elsewhere, YOU GUYS ROCK!! Thanks/jim
Have you been told lately that you guys ROCK!!!! Thanks for the new release of Start10 - solved both the issues I reported :) Best/jim
And once again let me thank you VERY MUCH for acknowledging my report with your reply. Best wishes! /jim
Hello. With this build of Windows, the "search box" displays with this odd rectangle beneath the text. If I uninstall Start10 the box displays normally. Also in this build the new "time on secondary monitor" issue persists. I created a screen cap of the issue, but I can't seem to embed it into this post so below is a link. Thanks! www.jimdorf.com/temp/start10_cap.jpg
Thanks Neil for acknowledging our issue report. Let me know if you want me to download a tentative fix for testing. Best/jim
Hi. Want to let you know that with this most recent release of Win10, they have added the time display to the secondary taskbars -- however Start10 seems to interfere with this change in Windows. With Start10 installed, that time display disappears after about 10 seconds. If I toggle the secondary taskbar off and back on, the time display appears but disappears again after 10 seconds. Even when the time does not display, I can still click where it "should be"
I like my Start10 software, but I must say that I have found the staff at Stardock not very friendly to its customers over the 3 or so years I've been a customer. You are highlighting an example of this - not whether they do or don't implement your suggestion but the obvious response that they don't care very much about your suggestion or that you took the time to make it. Oh well, we use their stuff or we vote with our "feet". /jim</
I sent this same request in about a week ago via a support ticket. I am comforted to see it here, and know that I am not the only obsessive-compulsive Start10 user out there :)
Look below the big "chart" on this page for the line "Already own Start8" ... https://www.stardock.com/products/start10/download.asp
