Dragons are tough. wildlands armies ate through 6 of AI armies with Sovereigns each one of them.
What difficulty was this on? The last Challenging game I played, there were dragons roaming around settled AI areas completely ignoring the AI player. I've even seen AI players and wandering monsters sitting on the same tile together with the number 2 above them sometimes.

I had a squad of wraiths with 70 dodge fighting a squad of mites with 66 aim. The mites kept swinging at the wraiths while the champion with the bow pelted them with arrows all day long. (The Krax champion provided the fortification.) It seems that once an AI unit is next to a player it will just stand there and keep swinging at the unit it first attacked instead of maneuvering to get to better targets. A big stack of Wraith Warg Riders with charge worked well for me before. Add lucky as a nation trait for extra dodge and it should be very hard to hit your units. Plus you ought to be able to attack first most of the time before they can even get the +5 defensive bonus.
