Also, I cannot think of a time where I came across a story where rape was presented as anything but terrible.
It has been said that director Francois Truffaut once said that it is impossible to make an anti-war film. Film theory at the time speculated that any movie about war would glamourize it due to the nature of film itself. Actually what he apparently said was that "to show something is to ennoble it." The po

Some of you may have noticed that in my posts here I have repeatedly pointed out situations in which men are also treated unequally and harassed. I would have pointed out a lot more of that but this topic is focused on treatment of women and I didn't want to derail it too much. Have any of you ever objected to articles that call parenting, childcare, education and caregiving "women's issues?" Every time I see that, I flinch. Here is a partial list of people who
I live in southern Ontario, where for almost a hundred years, it has been known as the industrial hub of north america. We have seen preferential treatment for curtain groups in all factories, lots based on religion, some on race. If a Mormon owned the factory, guess what religion most of the employees were, if the owner was German, guess what language most people spoke were. Not ever did I hear people moan and complain because you could cro
Of all the woman I know, one played some stupid game called farmville or something, where every guy I know plays video games, so, let's be honest, who's the target audience of a company that want's to be successful? If some woman wants to start a game company to make a product that I would think wouldn't have a hope in hell of competing with one designed for men as the target audience, all the power to her. I would wonde
I have a male friend who decided, on a whim, to play a female character in Everquest back when it first came out. The number of creepy borderline stalkers who came out of the woodwork was eye-opening.
I don't think the EQ box art helped much in that regard. It sort of promised something they expected their players to deliver. I didn't play it very long.

When I got my first paying job on the internet, my boss suggested not using my real name. I felt weird about it. Why would I need to use a nick to host some game chats and moderate file libraries and a forum? He had been around a long time, had been a co-founder of one of the earliest BBSes, and he assured me I would attract what he called puppydogs. It didn't make sense to me because nowhere was there a picture of me, we weren't doing any video or voice chats, sounded paranoid.
I don't entirely understand the Raiders example. Indy is clearly the main protagonist, so of course most people will identify with him, he's affable and good looking, etc.
Marion was affable and good looking too. The question asked was which character you identify with most. It's not the same question as whether you identify with the protagonist. The issue being raised by our TA was more that because women

Just read that article and it's interesting. I thought maybe I should weigh in here on whether making a game which only allows you to play a male avatar is sexist. My answer is, it depends, but usually no. While I appreciate the opportunity to play a female protagonist, I am not too concerned if the only option is to play a male one. Some stories would need to be entirely re-written for the female protagonist, which could be very expensive depending on a number of factors. If we're ta

I am hoping that when Leigh Alexander made that statement, it was poorly phrased, and the intent was to say that sexist men have such assumptions. That would still have been overly broad but sexists of both sexes do sometimes have that sort of view of the other sex. A friend of mine was told when he tried to join NOW that he cannot be a feminist because he is male and had no place joining NOW. That is ridiculous. I had an elderly male professor who had been a member of NOW since it started. H

Can't wait, very nice. I might be a bit biased heritage-wise but this looks very smooth and polished already. Conveys the theme clearly without being too froofy and over the top.

My suggestions as a regular user/member: Please try to find out why some of us can download and post in the forums but cannot properly rate and/or comment on files. The bigger the pool of potential raters and commenters, the less power a troll would have. Consider not allowing people to rate installable skins (windowblinds, etc) unless they have actually installed them. For example, if I wish to rate a dream maybe I should have to do so from within deskscapes. That wouldn't help with some

Windows 3.1. I had an animated bootscreen that was at least 256 colors, might have been thousands, can't remember. There was a program that made themes and it could do pretty much what XP comes with, but not some of the things we have now with Object Desktop, like the weird window shapes. I downloaded hundreds of themes for it from Tucows, a few I still miss. I wish I remembered the name of that free theme program, but it broke later. I remember having a big animated .gif as a desktop also. X
Are you using a tabbed dock, or a regular zoomber? Tabbed docks don't have running indicators.
I have a regular dock on the bottom edge and a tabbed dock on top. Maybe that's the issue, since the setting says it applies to all docks. Hmm. I'll see if I can get it working with one dock only, just a zoomer.

I have paid for and have the latest version, and no matter whether I check lit circle, default, lit triangle, etc. I am just not seeing any running indicators show up at all. I am using XP. Is this feature only available in Vista? Any advice? I haven't moved any of the default files whatsoever.

I see two possibilities here and it could be either or both. Some people now say "gay" not really meaning as an orientation but more a general insult like weak or moron. Most of them probably never had a kiss in their life from anyone and they probably just copy the stuff their dads say when their dads are on WoW. The opinion of idiots shouldn't matter to you. I know it can be hard to stay calm but remember in 10 or 15 years they will be sleeping on their mom's couches still wondering w

justfreegraphics, a really great source of graphics you can use is Creative Commons licensed images. There is a search engine at creativecommons.org, and you can search for images based on the purpose you wish to use them for. There are several types of licenses people can choose from so there is no confusion. If you want to change the image, click the little box that says "search for works I can modify, adapt, or build on." Here's the search page and and you can search Google with the

First thing to do is find out if you have a warranty direct from the manufacturer. If you do, call the manufacturer directly, because they have more experience with large numbers of users. If the guy at the shop built it, you're probably stuck with him. If not, this is a brand new computer, so you should have some free toll free tech support. The next thing to do is run all the Windows diagnostics, especially hardware diagnostics. Run your Windows help, and it should open all of those f

I may have some help for some of you who are having problems downloading or who need to reinstall. This is what finally worked for me. To do a clean install, I used Revo Uninstaller at the highest search level to remove all traces of Impulse from the registry. Be aware that it may false positive on a couple of Cursor FX files it thinks belong to Impulse. Make sure you check each thing it wants to remove. The number files do seem to belong to Impulse. After uninstalling, reboot. Not necessary usu

OK, nfortunately, I am starting to have many problems with Impulse. It tries to update itself and veeeeery slowly downloads updates. Then it still says it needs to update if I try to download anything. So I restart it and it updates itself again. Restart, same thing. Multiple times it fails trying to decompress a file because it claims some other application is using it. Nothing was using it to my knowledge, but I rebooted to make sure and launched ONLY Impulse. Still it couldn't decompress its
