It sounds like you want a "classic" RTS campaign or "Career Mode" where you start with a small number of buildings unlocked that increases over the course of several missions. I think that's a great idea, but I don't mind the current campaign mode either. It does seem a little misleading to call it a "campaign" compared to what you get in other RTS'es.
