Okay i managed to fix it and now my game runs smooth as butter even on highest settings. Not sure if it's relevant too your problems but ill post my solution here just in case. It was a problem with one of my BIOS settings. It my computer set too 'open case' mode. I changed that to closed case and now everything runs smoothly and all my games are running high FPS. Hope this helps

Just posting to say i have the exact same problem. I love this game to bits but it runs terribly. My FPS is awful even when running on lowest settings. This is running the game on a i7-6700K and a GTX 1070. Running in OpenGL got the frame rate to playable levels however it constantly crashes
