Well I should know better, I should have checked for video drivers but assumed since this pc was only a couple months old and I had already update those drivers once that they'd be up to date. Wrong assumption, there were even newer drivers and after updating and working out the backwards config (backwards from my preferred setup regarding display vs. port default) the problem appears to be fixed!
