If you don't realise a good UI is a good UI that's cos it's getting it's job done. You only realise how good a UI is when it's a bad UI (which for me a deal breaker).
I keep a document -- and this is going to make me sound even weirder, but seriously, I really do -- called "Good UI Principles." It's a doc I've been adding to over my UI career because I've found that UI tends to be an afterthought (and a late one at that) in game development because few people really unders
Hey timmyfred: This is a problem we definitely were aware of from the start and has to do with the separation of the sim layer from the user layer in the SupCom UI system. In our playtesting here I actually haven't seen the problem crop up lately. I don't have a straight answer about why that is; there's nothing I've done yet in the user side of the UI to solve it, but the engineers have been making a lot of changes and improvements to performance as a whole on the backend and I'm hopin
All the answers we've heard prior were "We're still thinking of how moddable we want to make it"
Well, we still are! We can't actually confirm anything at this point about that. Things are very fluid in game development and there's a reason why Scathis' catch phrase was that he could never confirm or deny anything...we never can unfortunately.
On a side note - the Space Siege UI does look nice, and its theme fits in with the game quite nicely.
Why,
Great little journal article Hellchick into the "creepy" world of UI design. Did you have much involvement in the Supreme Commander UI, more specifically did you see some of the good work that Goom and Saya did with Supcom UI mod? I for one, am a big fan of customisable UI's, and if this is possible for Demigod (time permitting), I think that would be a great asset. Nothing like customisable UI's and hotkeys to improve gameplay.
I didn't actually work on SupCom -- I w
Man, you guys are like the Oliver Stones of game development! Give you a little footage and you've got your zooms trained in going, "back...and to the left. Back...and to the left." It's awesome. But remember that I haven't actually said what each of those slots ARE. They could be abilities...they could be something else!! YOU'LL NEVER KNOW, MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA. (Well, okay, you'll know at SOME point, of course.) Some of those sketches are also a few months old. So some info on th
Thanks for all the great comments so far, everyone. Sir On The Edge: I ALWAYS prefer a slim and clean UI to an overly ornate one, so you can rest assured that I have that in mind already. :) In fact, it's one of the things I've often had to fight for (I've worked on five game UIs so far in the UI part of my game development career and in almost every one of them I've had to push hard against overworked UI). I believe that the less you notice the UI, the better. And as for point #2, I de
I bet if I tell you that I'm Caryn Law and I'm the UI Designer on Demigod here at Gas Powered Games, your first question is, "UI? Who cares about UI?" Your second question is probably, "Those shoes . Seriously, where did you get those shoes?" I'm here to answer the first one (sorry, the second one is a state secret) and hopefully make you care about Demigod's UI, or at least understand why I care a lot about it. In
And by the way, I'm convinced that in another ten years we won't even be having this discussion and it will seem silly that we ever had it. I watch my 11 year old niece and ALL her female friends and they spend 90% of their time on their Nintendo DS or their Xboxes. Give it another decade and the next generation of girls will laugh at the idea that they were once considered rare or special.
I wrote a bit about this subject a while back [link="http://www.hellchick.net/mtlog/2007/06/women_dont_want_to_be_spaceshi.php"]on my web site[/link]. I've been a gamer for a very, very long time (I'm old, what can I say), and I've been a woman for -- well, okay, all my life. Women gamers are much less of a rarity these days than they were ten years ago, and they span all genres. I don't think that women have any inherent bias against RTS games, and I don't think that RTS has any fewer

I would totally buy an Authentic Pewter Demigod Commemorative Chess Set designed exclusively by the Franklin Mint(tm).
I'm Caryn Law, and I'm the UI Designer on Demigod. Hello!
I work with Nate, and for a dwarf I must say, he's pretty tall.
