Yep... it's related to the game being paused.
Sins>Civ 4, i tried alot 2 get into civ but just couldnt as much as sins
I wasted many hours on Civ4, but starting a new game is always daunting. There's just something about turn-based that screams "Major time commitment!" Sins is actually very deceptive. Its immediacy makes it so easy to get into, and before you know it, three hours have gone by.
Yeah, this game has done a pretty good job of wrecking my already inconsistent sleep patterns.
Other obvious ideas are cultural victories (such as have your cultural influence spread to x% of the map), territory control (hold x% of planets for y amount of time), economic victory (not sure about this one; perhaps have trade ports covering x% of the map?), and so on. You'd need to add another screen to the interface to show how close each player is to achieving each victory condition so you can respond appropriately. For example, if someone's close to achieving a cultural victory
I'd like to see a way to disable auto-join globally so I don't have ships joining a fleet that happens to be stationed at the planet. It's a bit of a pain to crank out some defensive units and then sail your fleet off only to leave your planet without defenders because the ones you just built joined the fleet that you just sent to another planet.
Sins is the thinking man's RTS. :)
A couple of suggestions concerning pirates: 1) Give audio warnings concerning pirates priority in the sound queue. As it is, sometimes the announcement that a pirate attack is pending or that I've just been outbid doesn't play, and I end up having to fight off a bunch of pirate ships because I didn't up my bid. 2) Perhaps not necessary if 1 is implemented, but I'd like to see something in the main UI that shows a countdown to the next pirate attack and who their current target
However, this is not a top priority in my book, as this is a RTS game, which mainly deals with combat and units. And like in almost any RTS game (except the ancient Seven Kingdoms series), I simply ignore diplomacy altogether.
It's my understanding that Stardock doesn't want this to be "almost any other RTS game". A deeper diplomatic game would certainly be welcome.
I wasn't in beta, but from what I gather the PJI there were more useful. No one seems to really know why they were changed.
Actually, people seem pretty clear on why they were changed: super weapons. Imagine super effective PJI's at each one of your opponent's planets and a super weapon positioned deep in his territory. Now tell me you wouldn't have been screaming for a nerf.
So when you download a game from Stardock, does it need to be "activated", or is it essentially a copy just like you get in stores except you download it? How does that work, exactly?
Try playing a 2v2 with locked teams so you have a permanent ally. That helped me immensely since I was able to watch the AI and get some idea on what I should be doing, plus you can call for help if you ever get into trouble. It took two or three games, but I got the hang of it. I just finished my first solo against two easy AI and won pretty handily.
I really like the "Control Point" and "Space Race" ideas.
How exactly does the digital download work? Does the game need to be "activated" before you can play it? Is it identical to the CD/DVD versions? Can you burn the files to CD and have a copy of the game just like you could have bought it in the store? Just curious.
Alright, I take back what I said earlier. I just finished a game on a map that included a small fleet right off the bat. Made for a really fast start to the game. It'd be nice if the map description told you what you were starting with.
I'm not sure what "lots of ships" you're referring to, but you start off the game with a frigate factory and two construction drones. The drones are built automatically and are not a unit you can build yourself.
I have no idea what the most powerful composition is, but at the end of my game last night, I had a mixed fleet of about 60 ships including two upgraded capitals (one at level 10 the other at level 6). They pretty much mopped the floor with anything that came into contact with them. Granted, this was against the easy AI, but it was still fun.
irony is many new players find the hard AI very hard to beat.
How is that ironic?
Yeah, don't ignore culture. I forgot about it completely in one of my early games, and before I knew it, my capital was down to 60% allegiance and dropping fast.
Vote: "I love it!" I've been waiting for an RTS like this since I first played StarCraft. I even once had it in mind to mod WarCraft III so that all units had double the hit points and did half the damage in order to slowdown the gameplay and make it more strategically interesting, but I'm pretty sure Sins is far better than that experiment would have been. Keep up the great work, guys!
do take into consideration that not everyone is in the same fiscal position, and that not everyone has a reliable, high speed internet connection. I presently get paid primarily in cash, making it difficult to to pay for things online. and my internet connection is patchy at best. As a result, i prefer to deal in physical commodities. So when i cannot secure a game because of a publishers disregard for alternate options, i tend to become disenfranchised with them as a company, rather than
Sure they are right from the game, but you have to admit screen shots are generally specifically chosen. Not so much. A lot of the last groups of shots were just Zoomba pausing mid-game and taking pictures. Certainly he positioned the camera to make it look nice, but they're not specially staged in any way. It seems like you just re-worded what I said <img id="ImageResize_Image_6" onload="ImageResizer.createOn(this);" src="http
PC gaming should be made accessible to all levels of budget and technology. I, and most gamers I've talked to, wouldn't mind upgrading my PC every 4-5 years or so for a few hundred bucks, but we absolutely won't spend upwards of $700 every year. More developers need to take note of this fact. This is exactly the reason why I haven't played Supreme Commander -- I dig the game but my system screams in misery when I get into even a medium sized battle. I'm not going to buy a new CPU
I guess it's less a 4x game and more an RTS designed to appeal to fans of the 4x genre. On a whole I do agree that victory conditions other than military conquest would be welcome, but the game is still excellent as is.
the Ai has a amazing ability to know exactly when your fleet leaves
It has been my impression that the AI is extremely efficient at recon, so it's really not an "amazing ability".
Great job guys, because of this I'm definitly picking up Gal Civ 2 and the expansions.
This is my first Stardock game, and I've been really impressed with the developer and the quality of the product, so I'm definitely considering giving them more of my support with a purchase of GalCiv2.
