Nobody has any starbases at the moment (except me). The pirates have pretty much taken care of that. And man-o-man, these pirates are tough. The Minotaur and Hydra class ships couldn't hang. I'm cranking out brand new class "Swashbuckler" pirate-killers to deal with the problem... and finding success. I've cleared out my immediate space and am poised for my next strike. I'm not sure when it happened but the Terrans are at war with everyone but me. And since they are, and with the p

Unfortunately themocaw has been MIA for some time :( I wish he'd come back and continue his AARs and storytelling. His writing was awesome.

Alright. I wasn't able to devote as much time as I would have liked this weekend to Galciv. You know, real life got in the way. But it has been one helluva ride thus far. I loaded up my game and I start cranking out my Krynn-killer "Krynnsbane Mk II" ships. I quickly take out the Snathi use their home planet as a jump off to find those blasted Krynn. Judging from the trade routes leading to hidden parts of the map it appears that they are in the southernmost tip of the galaxy.

That interesting you point that out about the lower PQ worlds turning out to be diamonds in the rough. Now that you mention it I also have seen that happen more times than not. As for advice, just focus on what you are doing. I haven't played the beta yet, but the Korath, Drengin, and Yor are going to outpace you militarily because that's what they do. Their infrastructure suffers for it. Let them build their ships. Just build enough so you don't turn out to be the small kid in the

A play large with everything set to abundant except habitable planets. I like the size but I don't like the headache of managing so many planets. But, regardless of play style and map settings, Zyxpsilon nailed the most important notion of any setup: versatility, flexibility, adaptability. Maybe along with 4X we should refer to GC2 as 3-bility. No, on second thought, we probably shouldn't ;)

I still don't even know where the Krynn are but you're right, I really need to stick it to them. Maybe I'll go conquer those silly squirrels, the Snathi, and use their world as a staging base. I'm almost positive that the Krynn lie beyond their space. Besides, I can use some extra production planets and I'm not ready to start two wars by attempting to bully the Yor. I'll let you know how it goes :CONGRAT:

Well, it mostly worked! I had three fleets of two medium ships apiece. All of them were hunting and being chased. One was being chased by *four* fleets of Krynn ships. I set Research to 100% and ran up the Missile Defense tech tree until I hit PD Combo. Then I started cranking out my Krynn-killers - medium hulled ship with 4 Plasma IIs and 2 PD Combos (8 off/6 def). In the meantime, unfortunately, the Krynn started grouping transports with escorts and my three measly fleets were ta

Alright, since you shared so much Zyxpsilon and since the post is about raw deals, I'm going to throw this out. In the game I mentioned earlier I fought back from a crappy colony rush, took the two planets from the Yor, and then the two of us continued to pound the crap out of each other until Peace was finally struck. We were both taking heavy losses and neither of us was gaining any ground. Besides, the Drengin and Krynn (whom I have not seen yet) have both declared war on me. Some

I play all three but tend to play Neutral the most. The extra trade bonuses and the instant planet tile access rule. Good is fun because, like you, I'm a good guy. I like to pulverize the wicked in the name of galactic righteousness. Evil is also fun, for me at least, because I get to roleplay as a ruler I would never possibly be. Muwahahahaha!

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have no bonus tiles on any of my planets besides an influence tile on my homeworld. Battled the Yor for quite some time last night. I held my own and took two of their planets but they took out a key economic resource and a few economy starbases, which hurt. Now their ships outclass mine and the Drengin and Krynn have both declared war on me. I had to save and quit at that moment... just to roll up the sleeves and try again tonight >:)

Huge galaxy but I only have my homeworld, my dinky homeworld neighbor, and a PQ 12 after colony rush. Yor up north. Drengin east. Korath south. Rush researched Aquatic worlds and picked up a 6 and a 9. It's rough, but I think I'm going to see if I can scrap my way out of this one :CONGRAT:

Now that's an idea, Xtanto. We wouldn't have to have the slider on the main page but instead have a button or something next to the tax slider that can turn on 100% approval. That way it's out of the way and can be toggled on and off by just clicking down once. If you start losing too much money you just go back and turn it off. I like it! Now about that popcorn...

Mmmm, popcorn. No, I see what he's saying. But I can also see how further automation can lead to less tweaking. Less tweaking leads to less "hands-on". I like to tweak, and it sounds like Stanley does too. The original post was a matter of convenience but I think some subsequent ideas took that request of convenience and turned down the road of "let the computer do X for me." While I support convenience, let's also must be mindful of what screen real estate there is to offe

While I agree with the notion of the convenience, I also have to agree with Moosetek13. If you give the computer too much control over your own empire then there is very little difference between you and the other AIs. This game is great! I definitely want to avoid a MOO3 incident where the developers gave the user so much automation that your empire pretty ran itself... and you didn't even know what was going on "under the hood".

That's too bad about LucasArts not letting Obsidian finish it. I would definitely go back and play it if it were a little more polished. And yes, Bioware passed on KOTOR2 to work on another game that was great but the title eludes me. It was set in feudal Japan. KOTOR2 was the work of Obsidian, yes. BTW, Stardock, I don't believe I will ever have to rant about these very issues with you guys. Keep up the good work!

KOTOR was so awesome. KOTOR2 just sucked. I remember so many things about the original. I played the story over several times and tried new things each time. About all I remember from the KOTOR2 was running around an old mine in my underwear, training in my underwear aboard the ship with some chick, and landing on some moon (may or may not have been in my underwear). I also remember the cover had a picture of some sweet Sith Lord, like Darth Nihilus or something. I remember just ro

Yeah, my guess is the UP resolution to play technological "catch up" that bestows three techs unique to each race to everyone. Any chance the United Planets vote screen came up and you clicked away without checking out the resolution?

You're ready for the next level. Don't be too aggressive in your spending or your expansion. Build a small fleet that says "back off" to the other civs. Don't get trounced.

Just keep believing and it will come! Heck, if Blizzard can come to their senses and make a StarCraft 2 then anything is possible. My heart is with turn-based strat games (GalCiv2 and the Warlords series being my favorite) but StarCraft sure is fun. Nintendo rules

I find that playing the Terrans is "easier" because of their diplomatic bonuses. When I need some spare cash I get more for selling of techs. When I'm struggling at the beginning I give away a tech or some cash to keep warm relations up with my neighbors so nobody (normally) attacks. The diplomacy bonus tends to keep me out of trouble and also earns me some extra cash. Of course, their econ bonuses help out too. But I also like the Yor and playing my custom race - the Mandalorians.

Yet another vote for "take as long as you need to make it right". I haven't preordered and I haven't played the beta. I'm still lovin' DA and have plenty of time and late nights to waste on that! Keep up the good work guys and gals!
