I'm no modder, but I figure it can't hurt for me to try to help anyway. I loved HW1 (played it on multiplayer for about..3 years I think. It was quite awhile ago now). Regardless of whether the mod is based off Homeworld 1 or 2, theres really only 2 races to work with. The Kadesh, Turanic Raiders and Progenitors do not have a large enough variety of ships to work with (if *we* stuck to canon i.e. did not introduce new ships) to fill every void, I think. Using the Progenitors would be a

You already can do that - there is a mod avaliable on the Metaverse that includes 'blank' hulls.
I play as the Terrans - i like it hard. Seriously, play as the Yor when starting out. The enhanced logistics and miniturization are hard to go past, especially once you add on the secondary bonuses from using civ. points.
I'd like to be still able to read the names of stars in the tactical view (fully zoomed out). When I play on gigantic maps, my pc tends to slow a bit (especially when I have a large force on screen), so the tactical screen is great for that, but I just can't view planet/star names. Similarly, it would be great to see fleet names. I like naming my starbases/fleets, and to have their name displayed in the tactical map would be lovely. </fo

The only way to permanently delete a ship design is to hit the 'delete' button, however that cannot be done with the core ships. Only your custom designs can be affected by that button.
There IS an upgrade option - its in the Shipyard screen. Infact, they simplified the process of upgrading by putting a button that says "Upgrade" in the Shipyard screen once you select an old design to update.
Mouse with wheel: $5 I've never seen such truer, succinct words to a question such as this. Bravo.
I'm enjoying this more than I did for GC1. Thats really saying something there, considering I played that for days on end. The ship designer just adds layers of addictive quality, so much that its more than most realise. Just wish you had a few options on gun placement, e.g. if the gun looked nicer with the 'muzzle' part sticking out of a particular module, rather than a large 'turret' thing. Sure, it may not be as practical as a gimble-mount
I wouldn't mind an external 250GB Maxtor if you ask me
