Note that this is all DA observations. Like Mistralok, I've seen it in debug.err when initiating ship-to-ship combat. My observation is different though; it seems that the bonus is always zero when the ships are roughly equal in power, or when my ship (since I'm the one with a courage bonus) is stronger than the AI ship. So the conclusion I drew in DA at least was that courage boosts a weaker ship in combat.

I really don't like playing with the -1 speed penalty, and as has been previously said, a custom race is just superior. In order to try out the Arcean tech tree, I paired it with a custom Super Isolationist race; it's a perfect match.

My observations; all from Tough games, mostly small and medium galaxies with a few larges and tinies. The Terrans are good expanders, but don't militarize much. Or at all. The Drengin are a bit slower at expanding than in DA, but just as aggressive. I thought they were a threat then, I think they're a threat now. The Altarians aren't THAT fast at expanding early on, but they get extreme colonization techs pretty quickly. They get planetary invasion, but seem as relucta

The "mustachioed Alan Bradley" actually does have a wide portrait - but the RaceConfig entry for the LentzLandians, which uses that portrait refers to the small portrait (gfx/race/raceimage30) rather than (gfx/race/Minor_Human_Offshoot). I also see the small, stretched portraits in the "first encounter" popups but they're fine in the trade window. I wonder if events that create new races and factions refer to the correct trade portraits, since the naming syntax doesn't seem to

Interesting. I've NEVER seen an AI trade away its last 3 or so worlds, on Tough difficulty. What version of the game did this happen in? Trading tech for worlds is something I've (ab)used a lot in early DA huge games though.

As far as I can tell, the instant you build an ascension starbase, you take a huge penalty in relations with everyone. And since the AI loses if you win, they should eventually go to war to try and stop you. However, the AI doesn't seem very aggressive in ToA most of the time, and they'll probably only declare war when they think they can take you on - which indeed could have something to do with difficulty. Did you have a much stronger military than the AI? Lots more planets? Did the A

In ToA, the way I see it, stock races have the potential to be superior for a certain playstyle and/or a certain combination of tech tree/super ability. For example, the Terrans appear superior to a custom race with Super Diplomat and the Terran tech tree. But if you want to make a (legal) race that has the Terran tree and, say, Super Breeder, it *has* to be custom. Thus, the custom race has a huge advantage in versatility. Then you've got other examples, where the custom race

Unless they give all their tech to your closest competitor on the same turn they appear, I don't see it being such a big deal. If you really are dominating, just send a transport and wipe them out! :D

So far, I've only played with it off in ToA (except the campaign), while tech stealing has been on and off. I'm currently going over all the tech trees and super abilities again. When I play Super Diplomat and Super Manipulator, I'll have it on to see how effective tech trading really is in ToA. I do agree that having it on removes much of the feeling that the races actually are different - the same can also be said for having tech stealing on.

Re 3) The Yor get a different tech with +1 speed. It makes sense for the Torians not to have it, since they're supposed to be less technologically advanced. Much of the Krynn tech tree seems copy-pasted from the Torian tree, so that might be an oversight. The Arceans are indeed designed not to have engines. To add some... 5) The Krynn has Aquatic World Colonization as cheap as the Torians, although the Krynn need to research Extreme Colonization first. This is probably an overs

Seen it happen with Iconians on a Medium map and a custom race (Terran tech tree) on a Large map. I did not have a research bonus either time. I had Creativity both times. Naturally, I have picked up +research anomalies and +research techs. Both times, tech speed was on normal, difficulty on Tough. It's pretty annoying, but it hasn't really hurt me too badly, I think. Still, I agree that it's a bug and should be fixed.

Random bolt-out-of-the-blue suggestion from a non-playing player: Hidden submissions. Eh, anyone? Eh? Eh? Wink wink, nudge nudge. The game of choice for submission would instead of being posted to a thread be PM'd to an honest official who wouldn't abuse the knowledge to benefit the team he or she is on. Assuming the honor system works perfectly here, there would be no 'oneupmanship', as you call it, and submission time could easily be made into a factor. (In a more interesting
