If it wasn't for gaming I'd stick with Linux - making gaming work there is just more of a hastle than I'd like. But I saw this conflict of intrest coming ever since the Xbawks launched - why make games for the PC, when they can make games for thier own console?

The beta was really dumbed down for some reason. I played it for a few minutes, got my "go kill zombies" quest and stopped. Then my friends grabbed thier preorders, got thier head start characters going, and wouldn't stop raving about how awesome it was. I broke down and bought a copy - any MMO is better with friends - and I'm blown away now too. I can't quite put my finger on it but Mythic apparently dug deep and found that bit of Blizzard-style polish. One thing about War

I'm still debating getting Warhead, myself. I've bought 3 games recently from EA, and only one has turned out good. And that game was done by EA Mythic (Warhammer online, smoothest MMO launch ever, and actually fun!). The other two were totally unsatisfying for what they were advertised to be - Command and Conquer 3 was an utter failure, and so was Spore (Space phase = boring, monotonous, and the AI has fleets while you have to micromanage everything?!) Additionally,

I'm with the people who state that piracy really exploded with the boom of just incredibly awful games that hit in the late nineties, where publishers dropped quality for quick profits. It isn't just one burn, it's multiple ones. There was just a real deluge of crap games and they haven't stopped coming. Half-arsed PC ports from consoles (Oblivion - total waste of fifty bucks, only mods saved that thing), games from an old series swallowed up by a new company and turned into

I feel the need to sound off in a different way - I am so happy that Multiplayer will come to Galactic Civilizations III!!! I've been playing this game series since the first one came out, along with some of my friends (as of Twilight, the count is up to eight of us!) and we've got enough people to fully populate a galaxy and play the game - but we can't. I'm not big on say, some sort of global ranking, or fierce competition, but I really do relish the ability for us to all get togethe

Yeah, in my games I normally set it up so that the smaller planets are Economy centers, feeding into my bigger planets which are specialized Research/Production planets. If I have an overflow of cash I'll buy techs from the AI, or send them into a war, or whatever. There's always a place for extra money - not so for production not being sent somewhere.

The Drengin got a little confused in my game at first - filled up thier planet orbit with colonizer ships but colonized nothing. Then they swapped into I AM DRENGIN HEAR ME ROAR WITH MILITARY MIGHT mode and just annexed their neighbors.

Yor are playable, but the lack of a Thalan starbase tree did suck - but it's being fixed in the next patch. I honestly wish every race had unique techs for every alignment, regardless of what they start with - Evil Altarians could be a serious contender for the supreme evil - the quintessential evil scientist race. Thank the devs for the tech tree editor, hmm? :D

You can also, of course, do the above with a custom race and Super Isolationist. I find a great sort of "Passive-Aggressive" strategy can be had by running a custom race with high Speed (you can get away with less ships since they move from planet to planet faster), Super Isolationist, and an abuse of +Influence whenever possible. This will allow you to extend your "ships go real slow" blockade out to silly levels, and form up your own defensive fleets while the ships are desperately t

[quote]The "limited tech trading" option sounds good in theory, but the problem with it is it will likely significantly disadvantage the more unique races out there. The Thalans for example have such a highly exclusive tech tree that it will largely leave them out in the cold. How do you balance this option?I'm the strongest advocate of this idea, because despite your nay-saying, you need to look at the big picture. The absolute rule for tech trading should be that if you can not research a techn

I'm no Brad, but I think part of the "working late hours" thing is voluntary. They could crap out a game that was mediocre and worth it in their timeframe, they just keep finding things they want to add, if SD works the way it seems to. On the bright side, my girlfriend is probably the one person happy the patch isn't out - I'm spending time with her now, which will cease the moment the patch goes onto SDC. :D

Some techs ARE expensive for some reason - but not all of them. No reason at all for "Laser theory" to ever take 22 turns when you have entire research planets. The scaling research cost is allright, but I think it's more of a fix for the fact that at high levels, you can research the endgame techs too fast, more on a comparative level than anything else.

You really still need them to be a part of a full mod, load the mod, then make a custom race and go into the techs selection, and set your tech to that tech tree. Of course, all the mod needs to have in it is your tech tree.

Yeah, it's one thing to not be able to do it, it's another thing the way it's put. I usually run Evil empires, so my first instinct is "Where is the button that tells my soldiers to put this guy's head on a pike for telling me where to put my spies!"

As far as the Tech Trees go... The only problem I have is that some of the techs are missing the wonderful flavor text... when you're used to getting a block of sometimes highly amusing text, it's odd to get "LaserTech III: A more superior type of laser." Some races are missing things like starbase upgrades, but that may be INTENTIONAL based on the differing tech trees, not a "forgot to give them starbase techs." As far as research goes - My biggest problem wa

Kryo, Boogie, Brad - you guys rock. Please don't listen to the one... I have no other word but Asshat... that is berating you for not doing it immediately. He must be a teenager that wants everything now, instead of everything correctly. I, as someone who's grabbed all the GalCiv2 games, and loved them to death, want to say on behalf of your loyal fans that you guys are still the best game creation house there is.
