Speaking of Fallout 1 and 2, I tried installing Fallout 2 on my dual core system: As soon as I clicked Install, the mouse cursor vanished and I had a lockup that I had to use the Reset button. XP 32 bit/XP 64 bit - did not matter. I brought up Task Manager and it stopped responding as well. Hence Reset button.

When I was considering a dual, dual core Opteron setup, I decided to download the pdf manual for the motherboard. In there, it stated clearly that the mobo required a Minimum of 647 Watt EPS PSU for stable operation. I mention this so that you won't buy an underpowered PSU and learn the hard way: When considering a mobo, download and read the pdf manual before committing to a PSU.

I chose an MSI NX7600GS, 256MB, dual DVI PCI-e 16X for my main system, along with an Antec PSU. I have no problems, cause I guess the problem mentioned here is limited to the 8800 series. I saw no point in getting an 8800, since I use XP and have different needs.

Actually, 3DLabs got hit with Patent Infringement and/or Copyright Violation, and they nearly went under as a result. It did kill the Voodoo line, although they still make Workstation cards in the same class as Quadro and FireGL.

GPU RAM is not used for system RAM. You would be better off adding system RAM, and making sure your video drivers are up to date.

I Play Corridor 7 under Win98SE, with the option that prevents dos programs from detecting Windows, and it runs fine. These old games are why I maintain the 98SE box. Unfortunately, I had to throw out the Blake Stone floppies, cause I kept getting the same runtime error message for loading the install program. Another one I still like to play is Castle of the Winds (Windows), and I have both 1 and 2. I know it runs in Windows 2000, but, will have to see if it runs in XP Pro 32 bit.

Extra power on video cards is not new. There was at least one Voodoo card that used an External power supply. I go back to the days when the IMSAI Altair 8080 was all the rage, and it only in kit form. I go back when there were only mainframes.

I remember playing DOS shareware DOOM with only 5 MB RAM, and it barely ran on my old 386DX/40 with 387DX/40 system. I couldn't afford to get 4 more 1 MB modules. My how times have changed. Those old ISA bus video cards were the major choke point (8 Mhz bus speed). One of my favorites is Corridor 7, which I first played in its floppy version. I have all-in-one DVD/CD burners in both of my computers. No High Definition though. Never had good luck with DVDROM drives. Had 2, and both died an early death.

Well, my final upgrade to this computer arrived: the second G.Skill 4 GB kit of 2 x 2 GB DDR2 667. Now all I have to do, is shut the system down, pull the box and swap out the Kingston for this, and I have 8 GB. The hard part is getting to the back of the computer case to disconnect and re-connect things. The rest is easy. First things first: a 20 fl. oz. cup of coffee!

I use a Lian Li fulltower server case, with 15 drive bays. Other than more square holes in the motherboard mounting plane and NO labels there, it is well engineered.

Quadro and FireGL are Workstation Graphics for mainstream 3D CG apps like Maya, 3D Studio Max, Cinema 4D, XSI, and certain others. These are not gaming/consumer graphics chips.

I have an AeroCool Xfire on my Athlon 64 X2 5200+. The only reason I did this, is that the stock HS/fan's screws that mount the fan to the HS are plastic, and eventually soften and come loose. It comes with Arctic Silver 5.

3D Environment starts with terrains and sky, to which you add vegetation to the terrains and clouds to the sky. You can also add objects like buildings and vehicles, as well as figures (humans and other creatures). Since this is 3D, all of these things cast shadows on other things, like the ground. Dystopic, The upgrade price for me was $299 from Vue 6 Pro Studio. Vue is 3D environment. Modeling is done in other programs. There is Easel, Esprit, Pro Studio (Esprit + all extras modules), Infinite, and XStream (plugin version of Infinite). 32 bit is stuck with a 2 GB RAM space, while 64 bit is not. Galciv and Galciv 2 run fine in XP64. 3D CG is my primary interest.

When I built this system, I had to settle for two 2GB kits of Kingston ValueRAM, for 4GB. This is not enough when working with Vue 6 Infinite 64 bit, and working with ecosystems. The ecosystem editor slows to a crawl. I just replaced one of those kits with a G.Skill 4GB kit (same timings as the Kingston), and will replace the other in January for a total of 8GB.
