You also have to consider that the majority of the newer players will be RTS players. THis game has to cater to them. And from what I hear, from many old RTSers this game is a tad to slow to ever be a big multiplayer hit, or even be competitive online.

No, single player isn't lacking at all. The game, however, will not have a campaign in the traditional sense and will focus more on making you have your own campaign, IE. sandbox mode.
