Yeah, I think the original poster is making a few logical leaps to get to his ultimate conclusion. First, addiction is something which causes the addict distress. There comes a point where you are being harmed, you realize you are being harmed, you want to stop so you are not being harmed, and yet you can't stop. I know, kind of a clinical definition, but think about what it is saying. Perhaps under this definition a hedonist could never become an addict... perhaps. People who reali

Once you get up to suicidal the only way to win is to reload until you get the perfect start Not true, you can still play out of a below average start on suicidal. There are (a few) positions that are just unwinnable on that difficulty, but it is very rare that I ever use Ctrl-N. And anomolies don't give 2500 anymore, the top is 1000. However, if you NEED a perfect start to win at that level, I whole heartedly agree with you, just play on a lower diff
Um, these descriptions of how the AIs ultimately fare in your games is interesting, but I think everyone (apologies to all) except Kryo is off the mark on what this setting does for custom opponents. I've played with it quite a lot, and here is what (I'm pretty sure) it REALLY does: For each race they have a seperate template for how they develop a world, and in what order they decide to research something. The drengin AI for instance will divide almost every tile in its unive
Hydro, I love the story by the way. Just for your edification, with super organizer you don't need an alliance. Empires will decalre war on anyone who declares war on you (except themselves) as long as they share your alignment. This works very well with tech trading off when there are no alliances, because it works as though the Altarians are the only ones with an alliance. AIs will even break alliances with other AIs to declare war by this rule. Also, one reason it is s
Honestly, I think you are selling super organizer a little short, but I use it differently than you do. Once the colonization rush is finished and civs start to militarize, I count up how many civs are potentially powerful for each alignment. In your game, the Drengin, Korx and Yor all seemed to be decent. In those conditions, I would go evil with my ethical choice, just to have better allies. I have gone to all three alignements with the Altarians, typically based completely on the
I realize that I may have no room to discuss with you as you play on a higher difficulty setting then me. Just because someone plays on a higher difficulty doesn't mean you can't comment on strategy. Don't feel like your opinion doesn't count just because you are still learning. For what it is worth, on larger maps I also have the experience of trade not being worth it. The most I ever got from one route on a large map was 240/turn... and that
If doing well in the game depends on luck, how is it that some players are always lucky no matter what they do? This game depends on luck about as much as poker. Lower PQ planets are actually really good in this game, because in DA the number of upgradeable tiles on them has greatly increased. Those class 1-4 planets are all gonna be class 16+. I really agree with CaptainYar. Getting a good starting position can make the game a little easier, but if you need it to be easie
You can't choose the party of your opponents for the basic races. The AI will make its own decision on what party it wants when it starts to load the game. In the latest patch they said that the party you set for Custom opponents wouldn't change once you set it. Otherwise, it would be too easy to weaken your enemies by giving them bad parties. As for changing political parties on the main race selection screen, that should only happen if you actually select a race, and then go back.
No. And the description of the "fix" has me... concerned. See WWW Link
Neither are bugs. 1) Your ships will only get the bonus if they have at least one point of defense in their base stats. If you build ships with all weapons/engines, they don't get the boost. 2) You need to be sure technology victory is enabled when you start the game. For some scenarios, some kinds of victory are automatically disabled. If you want a technology victory, be sure the box for it is checked when you start your next game. Hastur - also not a bug.
Should I get the expansion? Yes!
There was a bug in the original version of DA where the AI mistakenly overvalued your economic treaty very early in the game. Patch up to the latest version and this issue has been fixed.
Difficulty: Suicidal Settings: All Abundant, Scattered Stars Civs: 8 minor, 5 major You can check my profile I think for some of this information on my metaverse display. Hope that helps! Anything more than that should be our little secret. We don't want the other empires knowing my cool tricks.
Hey fellow empire companions. I'm just gloating a bit. I finally broke a score of 100k on a Medium map. I wasn't sure it was possible on anything below a large... so I'm really happy I managed it. Onwards and upwards!
The only way I've seen the comp break an alliance is through the Altarian special ability... which shouldn't affect the Korath. Good job, and good luck salvaging a win at this point.
I don't know how easy it would be to change, but I would really like another level slower for tech research. Call it primitive, and make it as least twice as slow as very slow research is now. Really let the galaxy play out with only low level techs, and make it take many many years even with large research bonuses to max anything out.
Under the new system, if you sign a peace treaty and then attack again, you pick up a "--they don't trust us" modifier and future civs will choose to just fight you to the death, or surrender to any civ but yours.
Oh, I was trying to improve the AIs tech. It was fighting a war I wanted it to win, and its ships were underpowered. Would have been a great way to kill two birds if it had accepted the trade. The question in the original post was why would I (the player) want lower level techs.
Oh by the way the defense bug is stupid. I didn't even notice, and I'll be ok waiting for the next update. You guys are ridiculous. So what a weapon is 1 point off. Why don't you try and have them find out the last integer of PI. We use examples of low values because they are easier to deal with. When attack values reach hundreds or thousands, those one points add up a lot and end up dictacting the outcomes of entire wars - even games. It may seem sma
Hello. I was the one trying to trade for the lower tech. My reason was for tech stealing during invasions. I hadn't done any research on the Phasor line. I had stolen Phasors, Phasors III, Phasors IV and Phasors V from invading planets. I wanted to trade for Phasors II, so that on the next turn when I invaded more planets I didn't steal a (to me) worthless lower level tech, I wanted to keep stealing my enemies highest level techs. The AI wouldn't trade, and of course, in th
Wow, how did I miss this thread. First, I didn't even realize we could email bugs directly to Stardock, I only knew about the forums. Call me a troll, guess I just crawled out of the cave... Second, yeah, the example of how defense will now work only raises more questions than answers. Is off type defense reduced to its sqrt value? Is defense that is reduced done so against all weapon types now within one round, or just against the one attack catagory in one round? Plus, th
If that's not broken I don't know what your definition is. It seems to me tech trading is still very useful, just not for getting tech If tech trading ceased to be useful in any aspect of the game, it would be broken.
There should definitely be some kind of slider for influence Oh, to turn down your influence? Have the government seize all McDonalds and nationalize them? That would be a great option. You take a tourism income hit, but could also counteract the diplomacy negatives for "- our alarming influence". Personally I also find that most of the culture flipping I do is by accident. I almost never build influence starbases, but I concentrate a lot mo
Anyone else notice that the Arceans, with their first strike ability, become basically unstoppable if they survive to the late game 'capital ship' phase? Yeah, at least for any AI to deal with. The only way to stop them is speed, so that you can always hit them and you nullify their super ability. I only played one game as the arceans under DA, and I had a 43 to 1 kill ratio (998 enemy ships destroyed, 23 personal ships destroyed - on the end game summ
I agree with both Purge and Horatio. It would be nice if the AI used the same rules, but at the same time... the AI just isn't as good as the player at using tech trading, and really it doesn't seem to make a big difference overall. For what its worth, I also play on suicidal. It seems to me tech trading is still very useful, just not for getting tech, especially weapons tech. You can still trade tech to get treaties, or start wars. You can still trade and/or give away weapons tech
