Look on the bright side, I bought the Collector's Edition and ended up being out $50. See? It could be worse. I was expecting a game with the depth and strategy of a 4X title, and got this instead.
I did not purchase Heroes of Might and Magic V because of hearing about destroyed drives and granting root access.
Umm, they removed Starforce (the thing that damages drives and grants root access) before the game ever went to press.
Is Sins like Homeworld? I loved the HW series it and the Total War series are the only RTS games to date that I liked. I usally hate RTS.
Sins looks a bit like Homeworld, but doesn't really play like it. If you're not a fan of the RTS genre, its doubtful you'd enjoy it. I bought it thinking it was going to be a hybrid of an RTS game and a 4X TBS game, but it's really just an RTS game with very little strategic depth and minimal replayability.
I've never found achievements to be particularly motivating, and the achievements in Sins (which mostly involve playing the game in ways that simply aren't fun) are particularly weak. Then again, there aren't many things about Sins that are much fun once you've played it a few times. You're smart to wait for a demo, Sole, I wish I had. Anyway, no, no particular interest in achievements in TA. Expend that time and effort elsewhere.
You bought an RTS, not a 4X game. Why do people keep saying that? This is not a RTS, or a 4X, its a RT4X. Its an entirely new concept, and at this stage really more of an experiment than a full fledged game in my opinion.
Why do people keep trying to claim it's an entirely new concept and a new genre when it's just a run of the mill RTS? Seriously, this kind of nonsense is what prompted me to waste money on the thing, so I'm here to tell any potential buyers that no, this
I suppose if you're the kind of person that bothers to play campaigns in this type of game that's a valid point, you'd want to play them in order. If you're just going to play sandbox games (ala Civ) then you should just cut straight to the most recent.
You bought an RTS, not a 4X game. If you were hoping for something with the depth of a 4X game you have my sympathies, I made the same mistake.
No reason not to go straight for GC2 with the latest expansions. Each expansion builds on the last one, providing a deeper game with stronger AI and more options. Coming from Civ background it won't be that hard for you to get a handle on things, and I suspect you'll really enjoy the game.
I tried Guild Wars, and it was fun at first, but I eventually discovered it was a grind-fest against uninspired monsters in canned enviornments, (Dinosaur skeletons in catacombs? Lame.) and had really boring quests. The PvP was a lot of fun, but I cancelled my subscription after a few months. On the plus side, it didn't have a monthly fee. Also, I've heard about a side-scrolling MMO that's free to play. (The name escapes me at the moment.)
Whatever you were playing, it was
I got a free 10 hour trial of WoW. Played it for about two before realizing that yes, that was all there was. I don't understand the appeal of the game, it's ridiculously dull. The entire game is designed to waste as much of your time as possible, as best I can tell.
As you may have gleaned from my previous post, I was very disappointed by how shallow and typically RTS-like Sins was. I would have to say don't get both.
A demo will be along in a month or two. And no, the gameplay's not any more like HW2 than it is other RTS games. It's more like Supreme Commander with more bases and much slower.
SoaSE doesn't have the depth of a 4X game at all, it's fairly run-of-the-mill RTS (sort of Supreme Commander crossed with Homeworld only bigger and slower). From what you've said, you'd be much better off with GC2.
Yeah starcraft is a national thing in Korea its amazing the level of competition and how entreached it hasbecome in the cultural. Sins vs. Starcraft is an apples and oranges comparison. Sins has gotten some nice reviews across the gaming community. I plan on shelling out some hard earned cash on it within the next month or so.Vuk-
Seriously, wait for a demo, it's not the game it's made out to be at all.
I enjoyed Starcraft in its day, but gameplay-wise it's been surpassed by more recent titles. There's an excess of micromanagement, I never cared for the linear campaign format, and it lacks simple modern conveniences like a "find next builder" button. Every attempt to rekindle interest in it has ended in frustration, I find it's better to play Dawn of War or Rise of Nations.
Starcraft would be a bad analogy, Sins plays more like a hybrid of Supreme Commander and Homeworld with a few extremely light TBS elements thrown in. Don't let anyone tell you it's Gal Civ in real time or some kind of 4X game, it's still very much a traditional RTS. Gameplay is centered around collecting recources, building ships, and hurling large diversified groups of units at your opponent's huge diversified group of units. The Capital ship hero system is identical to that used in Warcraft 3,
Virraith: I hope you are right about Age of Wonders. I decided to buy it. It was a little bit problem, because it is an ancient game, but I found it on Amazon. Amazon does not send games to my country, but fortunately I have a nice college in Austria.
Make sure you pick up the unofficial 1.4 patch, it does wonders for that game. I hope you enjoy it!
That number is distinctly less than credible, at least in the first world. I understand piracy is rampant in Asia and eastern Europe, though.
SP diplomacy in this game is well and truly broken, play with locked teams until they (hopefully) completely overhaul it. As it stands, those inane missions are the only thing the AI looks at, so you'll always be the target of everyone's hostility.
It really, really doesn't. RTS's, contrary to the Blizzard school of thought, are actually pretty lousy story telling devices.
A game about political issues shouldn't be connected to the discussion of political issues? But you can play the game without ever even knowing the site exists (as most people who buy the game at retail will). The site is not in any way essential to buying, downloading, playing or enjoying the game.
It's counter intuitive, I'll grant you. The site's an advertising tool, designed to bring people to the game, yes? What I'm saying is that, for me personally, a site ful
I have to admit that a website tied in to the political "discussion" on joeuser has the effect of turning me off to the idea of buying the game. Simulated politics is fun, arguing politics on the internet is not. You don't have to participate on the political forums.
I know, I'm just telling you the impact the site design has on me. I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't know that associating a game about politics with internet political arguments is in your best
I have to admit that a website tied in to the political "discussion" on joeuser has the effect of turning me off to the idea of buying the game. Simulated politics is fun, arguing politics on the internet is not.
Probably still not worth it, I guess. $50 for a game that's strongest in MP is always a bad investment, as I never play MP.
How's the AI in Dom 3? In Dom 2 it was a bit on the weak side, and once you finally got past the "playing against the game mechanics" thing and really understood the game (which took eons, incidentally) it largely lost its appeal.
