There aren't any "ships". You research your weapons, shields, ship size, etc. separately via the separate disciplines clearly laid out in the tree during your research choices. Then you build your own with the components you have researched.

The one thing going for MOO's combat that you can't do here is special stuff like boarding. You could wipe out large fleets and capture technology by the boat load if you were ready for it. Other than that this resolution system is more loyal to the idea that we play as an Arch(FiendAngelAdmin) running a sizeable empire: we might be able to micromanage most things but in space we still have to let the captains run their own ships.
Ok...so to avoid being redundant...I have read about 60% of everything mentioned already, let me add some that haven't come up: L.E. Modessitt Jr.: The Eternity Artifact Adiamante The Forever Hero : Dawn for a Distant Earth, The Silent Warrior, In Endless Twilight (Forever Hero)Flash The Parafaith War ********!!!! The Ethos Effect Archform: Beauty Gravity Dreams Octagonal Raven He writ
Actually....you get plenty:) you can trade it for money or goodwill to other Neutrals
Actually, I find that on tough, I can trade military techs easily enough with opponents...the only time it difficult is during a war...of course, I generally have a Star Democracy or Federation to supply rather a lot of diplomatic advantage and I make sure to acquire (build or land marines) upon the Diplomatic translators. It really is just about explaining to the AI that they really gain something by trading a Stinger II for their Laser V.<
I have a strange case of the AI building mining starbases deep in my territory on NOTHING. Oh, and has anyone addressed the AI tactic that involves leading an invasion with transports and sending in fighters as an after though once DOZENS of transports are just milling around? This is in a game on tough no random intelligence Huge map
Running 030606 version 1.0x While under democracy, I can get a comp to pay me to go to war with another race and sidestep the whole "vote" thing. ...should this not be an option or at least governed by the vote?
I have had a different problem...the AI doesn't seem to like building/researching bigger ships. I have won on influence/large/tough without seeing a ship above medium except for mine and the cargo ships. One would think the AI would take measures to reduce my spreading wave of Korx Cola and McAltaran Burgers...but they just seem to sit back and like it...granted, I seem to be friendly with everyone and their gerbils, but in a human game there would be
It is very frustrating actually to research Neutral research centers and have nada....took awhile to find them too.
Actually with reference to the weapons techs: The overvaluation leads to a wonderful exploit when you have enough other races. Trade or buy outright the weapon techs from one race and especially if you can get the leading techs too...then go to Everyone else and sell them progressively higher weapons tech. This can NET you several thousand bc's and the excess technology that everyone else is working on providing you with a substantial tech boost that your civ will spend many weeks digesting just
