Nice call on the grammar, Ash. I hope I can resist the urge to start printing out the text and going over it with a blue editors pencil.

In MOO2 you can gain tech from captured ships when you scrap them. I'm sure the devs know this as they talk about MOO2 all the time. I agree that they've probably thought of it, maybe even implemented it, but couldn't balance it. For my part I think it would balance alright if you could decomission the ship, and then have a random chance of gaining a random tech that was involved in the construction of that ship. If the ship has a high level mass driver tech in it, and you're focus
Ah well. Guess you can't have all the good ideas first. Still glad you're considering it, though. The longer the better! I've done some video editing, so I'd suggest starting with a long game and editing out the "boring" parts, where you're just building up or rebuilding after an attack. I know that stuff isn't boring when you're the one playing, but it's pretty boring to just sit and watch it. Though I'm sure some people would be interested in a 5 hour long commentary.
I'll weigh in, just cause I like to , not cause anyone cares. It's not a dealbreaker for me, but I'd like to see 10 different hull styles. Doesn't sound like they're looking to add any hull styles for the free bonuspak, but it would be cool. I don't really know how much work it takes to develop a ship hull vs designing the "jewelery" that attaches to it, but I for one would rather have more unique hull styles than bling
Yeah, I read that. That's awesome. I wonder if it was my suggestion, or if they were already considering doing one.
I can't tell you HOW glad I am that you made it laptop friendly. You also have a very enlightened licensing policy which makes it perfectly legal for me to install it on my home PC as well as my laptop. I think what I'll end up doing is firing the game up in a window at work, playing a couple turns here and there while I'm not busy and then save the game to a flash drive and take it home to my gaming desktop where I can really get down to business. I'm not sure
Aren't we all just so annoying, coming in with our ridiculous ideas, expectations and demands? Well I have another one. Not sure if this has been brought up before, or if maybe this is already in the game and I just haven't heard about it. I think it would be kind of cool to design a custom race to play AGAINST. I think it would be fun to create a computer player that has abilities and bonuses specially designed to either complement or oppose my own. I could create my own gr
Just a word of warning to anyone who wants to invest a lot of time and effort into mods based on popular sci fi franchises. Let's all bow our heads in rememberance of mods that have been "foxed" because they were infringing on copyrights. Those ship designs are all trademarked and you can get in trouble for using them. At best you have to stop production on your mod, turn over all materials and copies to them and sign away your life promising never to do it again, and at worst they'll take yo
Rather than a random event during battle, how about it being a random event that arises out of cultural influence? If your influence extends into enemy territory there could be a very small percentage chance each turn that an enemy ship might defect to your side. There would have to be a critical mass of influence, state of war/peace, morale, etc. It wouldn't be nearly as hard to balance because it would just be a random event along the lines of planets falling to influence alone (
I guess the stardock guys aren't really watching the forums...I'm surprised they haven't weighed in on this post, or removed it or something. Wouldn't think they'd want people posting screenshots from a final release, especially a cracked one.
In regard to memory protection, if the Stardock guys have done a good job, any attempt to alter memory allocated to the game will cause a crash or an error.
I didn't miss the extra downloads, but I will say I was slightly confused as to why when I did the "install" it didn't just load everything and only did the core game. That seemed a little silly to me to have to queue them all up manually.
I assume empires are like clans in other games? What benefit does an empire have over playing solo, since there's no multiplayer anyway?
I'm not clear on one point though in terms of advantages and disadvantages. It says in the manual that terrans have the disadvantage of not having explored the galaxy, whereas other civs already know what's out there. I was sure I read a post by one of the devs that everyone was equal on that front, and everyone had to scout. Is this only true at certain difficulty levels? I understand that it's a plot point for the game, but it does seem like an unfair disadvantage for the player
After reading the manual from the pre-load and watching the tutorial videos I'm feeling confident enough that I think I'll take on a sub-normal game. The easiest difficulty has the computer AI having something like 10% of its economy. That's too weak for me and wouldn't be a challenge at all, even having played the game. If sub-normal is a victory on the first try I'll go up to normal and then to bright until I start losing. I'm torn if right now I'll be playing a 3 oppon
Hehe. Not too bad. I image the curved neck isn't a very common type of hull style.
I agree on the Joss Whedon thing. I have a feeling that there may be an intersection of the fan base for Firefly and GalCiv, or maybe just TBS space games in general. I for one am looking forward to seeing if the engine can model something similar to a firefly.
the key people essentially get to ramble esoterically about whatever high-minded design principle influenced this decision or that decision, etc. Call me crazy but that is exactly what I love about DVD commentary. You're right that I'm more interested in ramblings that than a product demo. Product demos are great, especially when the
I'm moving this to its own thread since a few people thought it sounded like a good idea. I think a petition is in order to politely convince our friends at stardocks to create a play-through commentary a la DVD director's commentary. Get a few of the key developers (art, AI, design, UI, what have you) in the room and everyone plays through a game and comments on various things that happen, such as why X happens when you do Y or how you arrived at the visual style we're see
Oh come on....did you really think we wouldn't want more? Sounds like from the way that first one ended all abruptly that it went on a while longer. I know we'd all like to see more. I think I'd like to see a whole game played out DVD commentary style...where you have 3-4 of the key developers in a room, and you all play the game and talk about what the AI is doing, how the graphics engine works, how you arrived at one design option vs. another option...etc. Hell I'd probably p
Is it just me or are the Stardock people not being very forthcoming about the contents of various boxes? I don't spend a lot of time in these forums, but I see this question a lot and don't ever read an official "this is what's in the box you're going to get" answer. From what I've put together it sounded like everyone who pre-ordered for a physical CD is getting the collector's edition with the tech tree, plus all of the pre-order bonus content to be downloaded from stardock. Those
It's mostly an issue of feeling good about myself when I'm playing. I'd rather play against an AI that has all of the same capabilities as me, but just isn't as smart sometimes. At super low levels I can still see the advantage of the player being given extra money, but I see that as more of a checkbox on the difficulty selection. AI difficulty separated from monetary bonuses or penalties. I know they're planning on making some of the AI functions disabled at certain difficulty
I'm really looking forward to GalCivII releasing soon. I haven't played a TBS game since MOO2 that I really liked. From what I'm reading, though, I get the feeling like the AI is going to wipe the floor with me. I like this games but I'm also not all that good at strategy games. That said I also don't like "cheating" by having the computer just give me extra money. That feels lame to me. So how about this as a method for "cheating" other than just handing the computer more resour
