You can't take minor races with influence, and you CAN ally with minor races. In my current game, I attacked the Drath, just to find out the Scottlingas (who 7 of my trade routes went to... :o ) were allied with the Drath...and declared war on me to protect their ally! This little error on my part cost me >300BC/turn income... I'm not sure where you can tell who the minor is allied with though, I can't think offhand of anywhere it can be f

I've noticed there's always a CTD IF: - During the campaign you create a new save game (NOT one of the autosaves) - Start a non-campaign game, save the game with the same new save game you created during the campaign. - When loading this save game, it'll crash. This might just be me, and it might require more specialized circumstances than those I mentioned above, I'm not sure. Might this be what you're running in t

This is definitely an issue, since if you DON'T tech trade with the AI's (as I did, since I want to make it on my own steam, not the AI's research!), they will be so far ahead of you in tech after a game year or so. I was playing with 5 opponents, was doing about 33% of the galactic research, and the AI had tech I could only dream of. Why? Because they traded everything they had amongst themselves! Therefore, if you don't do this as well you'll end

I've found the - "I know what you're doing..." usually occurs for me when I AM massing near their borders but haven't declared war. But if you're not massing near the border...I'm not sure. The biggest things I've found that influence relations are the size of your military as compared to that of the empire you're looking at, and your ethical alignment as compared to theirs. Ethical alignment is a big one, if you're evil and they're good,

Twice yesterday I had a very odd thing happen. Once was after leaving the computer for a couple hours with GalCiv2 just sitting there idle. The other time I'm not sure, but may have been the same situation. Anyways, I'll try to describe as well as I can: The mouse cursor icon in GalCiv2 froze up. I managed to minimize GalCiv2, only to find that my windows cursor was frozen in place as well. Or at least, that was how it seemed. In actua

You're obviously entitled to that opinion, and I'm not going to change your mind. You're not going to change mine. But please bear in mind that GalCiv is a game that can be leaped into very quickly. SEIV often takes a little bit to get to the same stage, the point where you meet a bunch of races and start really getting into the tech tree. Do reviewers play a game for several hours to get an overview of the entire game? Nope. Therefore, a

As a matter of fact, I did. However, to quote someone from the SEIV forums: sales != quality(spears, nsync, good charlote all sell tons of crap and big mammas house 2 was the #1 flik last week)... Shows that a lot of absolute shite has a lot of sales. I am NOT saying GalCiv is crap, trust

I think that no one who posts either here or at the SEIV forums can be considered objective, so how is your opinion any more objective than that of Atrocities who posted his opinion that you quoted? You say GalCiv is king, he says SEIV...who's to say who is correct? Also, as was said above, it's rather difficult to compare the two, as they appeal to a different demographic, though with some overlap.

Something that would be a nice addition to GalCiv would be something like player-caused disasters. Sure, a star may not go supernova in the timescale of the game naturally, but given a sufficient technology level, is there any reason why a player should not be able to blow another player's star? Or collapse it to a black hole? THAT would be fun! <img src="smiles/Laugh.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absm

How do the mods improve the AI? I'm no AI expert, but one mod in particular (The TDM-Modpack) was made by a group of dedicated players who knew what they were doing. In a stock game, the AI has especial trouble with minefields, rarely uses stellar manipulation, has somewhat weak ship designs and a fe

In reference to the original poster...how could SE5 be a copy cat of GalCiv? The SE series has been around commercially for 10 years now. Unless I'm badly mistaken, GalCiv hasn't been around nearly so long. Copy cat...yeah. Uh huh. As other's have said, you can't really compare Space Empires and Galactic Civilization. The games may be in the same genre, but they're totally different in all ways that matter. GalCiv has a tough

Speaking as someone with a little bit of knowledge of SE5, let me tell you that Malfador has publicly stated in IRC chats that the "realtime" combat will be pausable. Therefore it is more like a hybrid between a turn-based combat system and a real-time one. As far as I know, the reason Malfador chose to go to a semi-realtime method of combat was to resolve some long-standing issues with the turn-based combat system. Take this situation in SEIV as an example. You
