they did the same thing with XP. Once SP1 came out you had to update to it to get further updates, etc.. on and on up the chain. But... that was ok because it didn't have the "8" in it huh...

As near as I can tell... since the new update to 8.1 you now have the ability to close your modern ui apps using a traditional "X" on the tooolbar. The only thing that Modern Mix offers now is the ability to run the modern ui apps in a window.

With 8.1 you have the ability to boot to the DESKTOP, not the start menu. With 8.1 you can also have your desktop wallpaper display as the background of your start menu as well. If you want to customize your new start menu, about the only thing that is going to do that is a program called Oblytile.

The next version of Windows is going to have a combination of legacy start menu and tiles. It looks pretty nice from what I've seen. Currently, yeah you have to take a step backwards with your start menu to get a windowblinds to skin it. I sincerely hope this will cease when MS changes the start menu system.

Looks like Modern Mix will no longer be needed with Update 1 (at least from the aspect of closing a Modern App via the X in upper right corner ). 8.1 nixed the need for Decor8. It sure would be nice if you crafty folks came up with some good skinning options for the modern ui now. [e digicons]|-)[/e]
