configuring virtual dektops

Hello,
I'm playing around with virtual desktops at the moment - yesterday I managed to get into the configure menu, but today having given my
computer a night off from studying quasars for the Einstein@home project
I find that on powering up I seem to be no-where once more and when
I install virtual desktops - the configure menu is in-active.
Do I need be in a different mode i.e. developer, and how do I return to this.
Any help appreciated,
