A Man in Florida decided he was tired of Christmas, so he hung a Santa, bound, gagged and blindfolded, in his yard.  His neighbors were noticeably upset, but the man claimed free speech for his display.

I can understand his frustration, as we all know that Christmas is very commercial, and when I first heard about it, I laughed!  It sounded funny.  But then someone pointed out that it would traumatize the children.  I wont go that far, but it does send them the wrong message.  I think most children can tell the difference between a statue and a real person, but then they are getting exposed early to some people's hate.  I guess kids cant be kids for very long as some people just want to make them little adults at a very young age.

Mornin', Guy. Did you get a lot of snow?

This is completely inappropriate. It is disturbing and wrong for all. There is freedom of speech, but there is also the welfare of the neighborhood. There are laws against this: disturbing the peace!

No, just ice.  But it is melting now.  We were on the line again!

Yeah, that's pretty sick.

That's pretty amazing that someone would do that. I agree with you that I don't think it would tramatize children, but it sends a stong message of hate and intolerance.

That being said, I do have some respect for the man, who said that it would be down in a timely manner (sometime last Wednesday). He made his point and sees no need to cause any more strife.

Yeah, that's pretty sick.

It takes all kinds.

Right on both counts.  I do agree it is his right, but that does not make it right.

That it does. Let the kids be. Let them have their Halloween and their Harry Potter.

It could be worse, you know, he could have hung a Jesus figure. Hmm...now there's a political statement!

Ouch, nice one, LW.

Ouch as well. But imagen if he decided to do that to someone dressed as Santa. So yes it could have been worse. Although I personally don't understand why does everyone else have to know you hate X-mas and Santa.

Now that I think about it, nice idea for a new decoration for Halloween next year. Drop a hunged, bound, gagged and blindfolded Santa from the roof when kids come trick-or-treating to my house.

A bound, gagged and hanged Santa would be a scary sight, I agree.... but nothing compared to the trauma that this hideous scene would inspire!!!

I can't BEGIN to imagine the hate that guy has in his head, no forethought as to any damage he could cause a child.

He probably only took it down so that the neighborhood lynch mob didn't come for him......

but then he'd cry out his rights were being violated.....

ooooooooh, i can't stand the likes of this kind of Grinch....ole meanie

That is pretty much why I dont think they will be traumatized.  But as I say, it also shoes them the ugliness of the world when perhaps they should be more interested in Harry Potter.

All I can picture is McCauley Caulkin in Home Alone!

I think you got it!  He is a Grinch!  The term was right before us, but you were the first to state what is so obvious!  I hope the cookies are working.

My children have always been taught that Santa is not real. But we've been careful to balance that with a reminder that they shouldn't spoil their friends' fun by telling them he's not real. This guy's a douchebag in my book (hey, free speech, right?)

... I was thinking of it that way. Maybe he was protesting the commercialism of Christmas? ... I don't know. Maybe he's just a sick puppy.

Right (and right).

I would hope he is an example of "Act in Haste, repent in Liesure".

Maybe he was protesting the commercialism of Christmas?

Maybe he is a 30 year old man living in his Mom's basement and she *just* told him that there was no Santa.  Being so distraught, he picked up the light-up santa from the yard and went all postal on it.  He was then heard to say: "next she is going to tell me the Easter bunny isn't real, either......"

The article is not longer available to read nor any pictures available to look at, so Judging by the comments I get a mixed feel.

I reckon it was done as a joke that backfired since everyones reaction was mostly negative? Personally I think it sounds absolutley hilarious!

In one sense it is. WE can laugh at it. But in another it is sad. Would you want your pre-teen child to see it?

I dont begrudge his rights, but I am glad my children never saw it.
