You think Canada's so great?

Fark right off and live there then.

My 13 year old daughter came home from school todday and said "America sucks.  I want to move to Canada.  My geography teacher says that's the best country in the world and that the USA should follow Canada's example".

"Excuse me?????????  Did I hear right????  Your TEACHER said this?  In what lesson?"

"Geography".

"Oh my fekkin' gawd.  Since when does a teacher's personal opinion have ANY place in the classroom??  That's it, I'm writing to the school to complain."

Why oh why oh why do the teachers around here think that it's okay to try and pass their personal opinions off as fact in the classroom???

I'm really thinking about homeschooling next year.  This is horsepoo.

maybe she (the teacher) should read latour's latest series of Articles.  That might sober her up real fast!

I explained to Shea the basics of socialized medicine and how it's paid for.  All of a sudden, Canada isn't looking so attractive after all.

Between UBob and Latour, I think JU can offer her an honest assessment.  I have never been there, so I have only second hand information.  But in actual fact, JU is a good resourse for her.

It is also very convenient for Canada to have a large friendly military superpower on their only borders. Makes defense spending easy to ignore in favor of massive social programs. Then explain what a lamprey is to her... she'll make the connection.

Hey, you can't blame her if it's true

Now tell her the truth.  This is a child, so keep the bias out of it.  Start with your reveling tonight.

"You think Canada's so great? Fark right off and live there then." :) But I do dharmagrl.

Maybe the teacher was referring to our Olympic hockey team.

Honestly, I do think Canada is the best country in the world, (defense spending, notwithstanding). But doesn't everyone think that their country is the best in the world? Don't you?

However her opinion, (no matter how correct it may be ), is just that, an opinion. It's not really her place to impose that opinion on a student.

Now, I can give you a long list why *I* ( <-----please note the personal pronoun ) think my country is the best in the world, but that would get tedious and I'm too frikkin lazy. (not a trait of an average Canadian, just me). ::

There are so many things that we're going to get into about Canada and other nations, and Canadian defense is one such thing.

BINGO!!!!!!!  Give her the information, let her make up her OWN mind.  Don't tell her, let her discover.

BINGO, AGAIN!!!!!

How would they like it if I went and taught a health class (which I'm supposed to do next year - yoga 101) and during that class I said that christianity sucked and buddism was the way to go?  There'd be hell to pay for that because it'd be MY PERSONAL OPINION.

I swear this school district hires from the bottom of the farkin' barrel.

Most if Canada is pretty cool and so are most of the folks I have met there. Now Montreal and most of Quebec, they can keep.

I'm not here to argue about whether it is or it isn't.  I'm here to say that a teacher's PERSONAL OPINION has NO place in the classroom.
