I am an ignorant European, but why does one has to express and celebrate to be thankful once a year and eat turkey at the same time? I apologise in advance for not being an American. Take it easy, this is now an international website.

the spirit is the same, we all have things to be thankful for, with or without, turkey, duck, or ham!

Ignorance is not a bad thing, it just means you do not know something, so, let me help this...

This goes out to not just StephanA but to all of my friends that are not of the American country and do not under stand our tradition...

Thanksgiving is an American tradition started by a group of settlers we call the pilgrims. It was the end of their first harvest and they where thankful for having it so they could survive over the coming winter. They got together with the native peoples of the time and had a feast of cultural favorite foods that could be made at the time. As a religious people they gave thanks to god for there blessings. It has evolved to this day as a tradition even if the original meanings have been lost or forgotten by some. even as a non countrymen you must have things in your life you are thankful for so I invite you to join us in our celebrations and give thanks for the things that bring you happiness and comfort, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

why does one has to express and celebrate to be thankful once a year and eat turkey at the same time?

The holiday is the result of a group of Europeans sitting down to a feast with a bunch of Native Americans sharing what they had and being thankful they had it to share.

I'm thankful for the morning and the evening and managing to get to see both. I'm thankful for the one who makes it all possible.

The original intent may have been to foster thanks for a bountiful harvest, but, unfortunately it eventually (within 50 years), turned into a blood bath of war and the imprisonment (reservations) of native american cultures and territories which permeated throughout our history. Many Americans choose to celebrate the intent rather than the actual result of our intention.

It's still an important day, as a reminder, to consider it a day of sharing with those who are unfortunate to have a feast upon their table.
