WindowBlinds 5: RELEASE DATE = Tuesday November 29

It's jsut about here!

http://www.windowblinds.net

WindowBlinds 5 arrives next Tuesday, November 29th!  Here are the key details:

  • Will support Windows XP (both 32bit and 64bit)
  • Windows 2000, ME, 98 users will have to stay with WindowBlinds 4.6 because the new performance features are only available on XP and those performance features make possible the new per-pixel glass effects.
  • It will be available on its own for $19.95 or as part of Object Desktop for $49.95.
  • Users who purchased WindowBlinds 4 after September get WindowBlinds 5 for free.
  • Other WindowBlinds 4 users will be able to upgrade for $15.  WindowBlinds 4 came out in 2003, so the typical WindowBlinds customer has received over a year and a half of free updates (that's why they have an upgrade path and users who just got WindowBlinds automatically get WindowBlinds 5).
  • A shareware version of WindowBlinds 5 will be available on Tuesday.

"Been there, done that too, Rahn. I can't live without my WB now. I change skins sometimes four times a day, just cuz I can. I have hopes than when I finally get to upgrade to x64 that WB and all the other Stardock products are ready for it too. And when Vista is released, I will soon be in line for my copy...with the hope that I can still use my fav skins."

My constant changing skins serveral times a day drove my wife absolutely nuts. I gave her my old system and built a new one for myself!!

I do believe it has been previously stated that those who purchased after Sep would get an automatic upgrade.... see the quote below:

Users who purchased WindowBlinds 4 after September get WindowBlinds 5 for free.

I'm confused. I've been paying for an OD subscription for 3 years now. Now they want to charge me again for the update? The reason why it's a subscription is because it updates periodical. I didn't buy Windowblinds 4, I bought the subscription to the program. Or is this update only payware for people that just bought Windowblinds?

If you have Object Desktop and a current subscription then you will receive WB5 at no cost. If you're subscription isn't current you will either need to renew your OD sub to get WB5 or purchase the stand alone program after Tuesday Nov. 29 to get WB5.

Great! When the 1st beta was released there were some problems using WindowFX at the same time. I´m using the 3rd beta and there are still problems when i run WindowFX. Will there be a fixed release of WindowFX before the 29th, so we can use WindowFX ánd WB5 at the same time without compatibility problems?

Greetings,

Sorry if this sounds dumb.

I'm running WB5 (Beta 2) on IBM ThinkPad T40 notebook and cannot get the glass effect working (guess the embedded ATI Radeon chip doesn't support the per-pixel feature).

Would the formal WB5 release solve this issue?

Many thanks,

Custom coloring using masks and Screen Edge Clip are still problems with the beta - are those to be fixed in the release?

Thanks,
Daiwa

If WB5 beta 2 says your drivers do not support per pixel borders then this is not going to be supported in the release version of WindowBlinds 5 either.

Thanks, Neil...fast reply! I believe Radeon 9000 or 9800 is stated as recommended for per-pixel borders...looks like it may be time to eat ramen for a while and upgrade the card [edit: will go to SDC forums and surf for pertinant info. AARGH, ramen again...]

believe Radeon 9000 or 9800

I think 9200 is the line. But there still seems to be problems, maybe associated with the Control Panel, since it also is skinned. Don't quote me on that though, I'm using nVidia 5500 and it is working awesomely with WB. My biggest concerns are: is it gonna be safe to delete skins, the Data Source errors are frustrating. And How soon after WB5 final will WindowFX be caught up with WB5 and happy? I still have skinning problems with WindowFX even if there are no options set (except for the fade effects for min/max/rest/menus). I bought my nvidia card to rid myself of the no alpha-pixel compat, and so I can wriggle my windows when I drag em, and the especially nice maximize limits. Anyway, can't wait for the final! Woohoooooo!!

I'm hangin' on every word, here. Gotta go research if my mobo will take a good card... oh boy oh boy oh boy! early b'day present for me!

The tablet pc input area skinning issue should be resolved in tonight's RC. And some changes were made to try and tweak the screen edge clip bit referenced above.

Thanks, s-l! Just got off the line with ATI in Toronto. Xnlnt support! They said my Intel D850GB with 512 RAMBUS RAM will support ATI 9600 Pro, X700 PRO and many others! Seems like $150 will get WB 5 rockin'! Hope this info helps others wondering as I did...will inform after upgrade...WHOOAAH! [...lotsa stuff goes w/ramen ]

YOIKS! I just couldn't wait any longer, and I thought:
Hmm.... an upgrade to OD from WindowBlinds is $34.95. The upgrade to WB 5 will be (I believe) $15 for me. So, $19.95 more gets me the rest of OD, and WindowBlinds 5 now! So, I went ahead and did it. Looks very cool so far! And, 2 thumbs up to Mike Bryant as well for StealthOS.

And, I have to add that one of my favorite apps, AutoStart Manager, no longer needs to be excluded with WB5. Very good! Gee, can anything coming up over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend compare?

Just one of those evenings...kids to bed...surf the forums...this is the most time I've ever put into checking out what's going on vocally around here. Quite a bit of great discussion and news this evening...reminds me: what's happening with the magazine-to-be? Slap me silly! Off topic... I'll sit down & watch some more.
