Just to view them. Sometimes the preview is condensed and the only way to see it in full view is to download it. Thats the best I have figured out anyways.

Some of them don't realize exactly what a screen shot is and think it will get them all the goodies shown in it.

Actually, I never really understood the purpose of the screenshot section. People upload a picture of thier desktops containing (in most cases) the works of others, people download them (for what, ill never understand) and the uploader gets ratings for them...... ????

Screenshots allow people to show off their desktops, with or without the works of others. Screenshots can allow one to develop a skin, popping pics of it in stages onto the gallery so that others can check out progress and give "pointers".

I haven't uploaded anything to screenshot gallery, yet, nor have I actually browsed through it. But this is my guess at what it's all about.

Jafo's monthly thread is the same for those of us who don't change desktops too often.

The screenshot section is for those who can't quit fiddling. As to why anyone would download, I can't say. I've only looked into that section a half dozen times since I started lurking Jan. 2002.

However, I check Jafo's thread several times a month and have found quite a few things on other people's desktops that I wanted for myself. I usually post a polite request to that person and they reply with a link to whatever it may be. A good example is the Clearone Winamp Skin.

I still haven't been able to find that one, Lantec!

I've wondered about that too...i think the system should change in this case. Screeshot section should not have a download button at all. All it needs is the download counter to be for screnies viewed at large. Every full screen view should count as 1 download.

LOL thats what i was thinking

It would be nice, and I think it should be required to at least provide the name of the items featured in the shot along with giving credit to each artist who's work is being displayed (link optional, but a good idea) not just "thanks to all the artists".

I think they are downloaded so people can save them to their computer for future reference. This allows them to "build" the "theme" if they wish and prevents them from searching Wincustomize to find it.

I thought it was pretty obvious that the screenshot section is for SCREENSHOTS of desktops. Well, sometimes to other people, it could be quite misleading. I remember a description given to it although i can't quite dig from the recesses of my brain who wrote it and where:
The screenshots section allows users to show to others how the works of skinners are used into their respective desktops. It serves as reference for others on how they can organize their desktop so that whatever ehancement they download, they will attain visual satisfaction with it.
Yeah i know it is not verbatim as i have read it but that is how i remember it.

You pretty much summed it up...and it should have a " view " button ..not a download button. For all of you to assume that some make screen shots because they cant stop " fiddling " are misinformed and this is quite an ignorant thread.

The screen shot section is not JUST what others make. I make quite a bit of my own things and I make ONE screen shot a week. My " fiddling " can take a week on one screen shot. Just because some of you think your better than others because your a " skinner " doesnt mean the rest of the people here arent important.

Chrissy, there is alot of work that goes into a good SS, there are a number of SS makers that always have something original in their shots, maybe you should go take a look sometimes.

A lot of works on this site are downloaded because people have seen them on someone elses SS, not everything is featured on front page.

The SS section is a useful tool for some and an artistic outlet for others and I for one think it deserves its place in the WC library.

Making a good screenshot is no easy task, having tried a few. Having the eye and aesthetic judgement to gather different components, maybe make some of your own (docks, icons, whatever) and arrange them together takes skill.

Like most of the different skinning projects a visitor to WC might take on, anyone can do a screenshot...but doing it well deserves some admiration.

Personally, I would like to see more In Action shots, or Works In Progress and Desktops as people really use them rather than so many posed shots. But, again, that's a personal preference.

I think the idea behind the download button was to allow folks to also upload more optimized preview images. Upload both a preview and a full size, and if users want to use the bandwidth to see the full size, they click Download, otherwise they can just check the thumbnails and zoom in on preview. Now, though, the norm is to use same image for both preview and file, because so many people will just click on the image to zoom in, you want them to get the full size too. I think....sounds right.

I agree. I feel that screenshots on this site are just as important as the skins on this site (Think about it - what are all these skins contributing to? BETTER DESKTOPS) *thinks up a stupid analogy* Its like going into a clothing store without seeing posters of models Showcasing the clothes(cmon - you know you see them) or um...*thinks up another stupid analogy* its like getting a flyer from a sears catalog of clothes without seeing any humans wearing the clothes...screw it, i give up

(Double post time)
In terms of the "Download" button, i think this site should do it the way deviantART does it, which is having 2 seperate counters for "views" and "full-views(downloads)"

I believe that is something they already are aware of. But will come in the future after more important issues are resolved. The download option in the screen shot section is confusing to a new member.
