Ode to my cat

A sonnet

I do not regret your 3 a.m mews,
Or ungodly races across my bed,
Those geckos on windows are indeed news,
But please don't take shortcuts crossing my head.

I do not begrude you your stolen treats,
Though daily you thieve from my pizza box,
And play bulimic with olives and meats,
But it grieves me, that puke on my clean socks.

I do not mind that you share all your fur,
With generous joy and abandonment,
Or clamp to my neck with vampiric purr,
Using your talons as a quick cement.

But why must you sink in your claws and tug,
Scooting those skid marks all over my rug?

My useless toothless dog, too, was leaving skids around the enclosed back porch today. He didn't scoot, but he had some stuck in his hind fur.

I gave him a bath. He was miserable.

Toothless chihuahua,
Washed up and hiney well scrubbed.
Melancholy munchkin.

(that thing was a chihuahua wasn't it? I don't remember, I only met it once....)

Yep. The non-hairless variety, although for some reason we keep giving him the chihuahua equivalent of a buzzcut. I prefer him with a mane; perhaps now that the weather will get cooler, we can let him keep some hair.

Nice haiku (except for the number of syllables).

There was a young man who haikued,
When his ex-sergeant got him a 'tude,
And started to quibble,
O'er the number of syllabes,
Which the young man pointed out was quite okay because although traditional poetry yes, was restricted by very formal forms in which the freedom was mainly given in expression, (see above sonnet,) haiku has become much more free verse, allowing a number of modifications, including more freedom from the classic 5-7-5 meter, rhyme, alliteration, and of course the traditional japanese nature theme, a freedom which has spread to other forms, one most immediately noticable to me being the limerick.....dude.

I give this limerick a two. It rhymes, but you really can't dance to it............
