WindowBlinds 5 Beta: Next Tuesday

WindowBlinds 5 Beta: Next Tuesday

It's coming..

The first public beta of WindowBlinds 5 is almost here.  Stardock released the alpha this week to its internal QA team to put the program through its compatibility testing before sending it out.  WindowBlinds 5's most notable new feature is the ability to support "glass" and full alpha blending of the title bar and border (no more jaggy borders).  The critical step has been to deliver this functionality without affecting performance for reasonably modern video cards.

In addiion, WindowBlinds 5 no longer has a "wbload.exe" and instead extends the painting of the Windows GUI in a more "native" way.  Or put another way, it has "zero foot print" in the same manner that the default bundled Windows themes (msstyles) use.

Users who have Object Desktop will be able to try out the beta next Tuesday (Oct 4).  Users of WindowBlinds 4 will be able to upgrade to Object Desktop at a reduced price.  Moreover, users who purchased WindowBlinds 4 after September 1 will receive WindowBlinds 5 for free.

WindowBlinds 5 will also be designed to run on Windows Vista natively by the time Windows Vista ships (the beta of WindowBlinds 5 should run on the beta of Windows Vista though the Windows Vista GUI is still in a state of flux obviously).

OK I have to go out. When I come back, I hope I get a surprise in SDC. Maybe I'll have that Bud while I'm out.

Might aswell wait another day I guess, it's come this far, another wont hurt (well it will, but oh well *sigh*)

You can stop waiting now. Well, unless you have a slow connection.

NVIDIA 4xxx and (probably) 5xxx users, there are some problems with the alpha support on those cards which may lead to what looks like overexposure; a related problem is that cliking on the titlebars may not work correctly unless you click on the text. ATI users shoud have no problems.

Ok, hmm. Is there a special page for the users of WB4 that wish to upgrade to Object Desktop for the discounted price?

Ok, done that, put the serial into SDC.. but I can't download WB5, it doesn't offer a download button, or an update button next to WB4.. Just "Run" next to both..
Can anyone shed any light?

Is "Show pre-release versions" on in the View menu? If not, you will not be able to see betas.

sumantaya - when WindowBlinds 5 is officially released, you will be able to get it via Stardock Central, or probably as a download link as well. Right now it is only available to Object Desktop subscribers (who tend to have a higher tolerance for potential problems in beta versions).
