Do you like Sci Fi?

Do you like Sci Fi?

Do you like Sci Fi? If so, what genre? Stories relating to planetary colonization? A.I.? Time Travel? The reason I ask is that after a discussion with a friend recently, we came to the conclusion that individuals (at least most of our friends) who are into computers are also into science fiction.

Personally, I like time travel, space travel, computer/robotic/a.i. stories. One of the best artificial intelligence stories I've EVER read is "The Two Faces of Tomorrow" by James P. Hogan. If you have a chance and run across it, give it a read. I think you'll really like it. And let's not forget Star Trek and Star Wars. :CONGRAT:

(The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever)

Another classic set of trilogies. Got'em all. Always wanted to wake up in the "Land" one day.

There are some great tv and movie sci-fi around that don't get a big mention. So aside from the obvious stuff, some favourites of mine include

Firefly, a fantastic series that i'd never have believed could be so good when you found out it was about cowboys in space. I think it was the same team who did Buffy that were behind that one. it got cancelled after its first season. Big shame as it was great sci-fi but I believe there is a movie on the horizon now so who knows, might get a season 2 after all.

In movie land, my favourite by far is an unknown flick called Primer. It's essentially a time travel movie but has to be the most convincing portayal of time travel ever. It's so realistic that you can't help being sucked into the complex plot and be hit by how profound the idea of time travel is all over again. Asimov would have been proud of it I'm sure.

I've become addicted to Star Trek lately (after we bought the first seasons of TNG). Am now eagerly awaiting season 4 to arrive in the mailbox . I think the message and ideology behind the whole series is great (even, or especially these days).

I've been reading scifi since I was a kid. I've always liked Heinlein, Asimov and even Arthur C. Clarke + a whole host of other great authors.

My all time favorite series is the "Ender" saga by Orson Scott Card.

I never could really get into Heinlein, Herbert or some of the other 'deep' authors. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking their work, I've been around the genre enough to know they're some of the sci fi's elite. But I guess I like my sci fi to be like a good summer movie, in the popcorn vein. Ya know, a page turning, can't put it down, gonna be late, what's gonna happen next kinda story.

With Asimov, any and all of the robot stories.

A. C. Clarke is out there on the deep end but some of his books have captured my imagination. One in particular, Childhood's End was both exciting and haunting at the same time. Actually thoght about trying to read it again (if I can find the time).

And I would love to read James P. Hogan's The Two Faces of Tomorrow again, for the sixth time.

Earth 2

I really liked it, but it suddenly disappeared from the network airing it and I never got to see the end of the second series....what a bummer....don't know if there were any more after that and I'm yet to see it available here in OZ on video or DVD.

Isn't that always the way...complain bitterly about neverending repeats on TV, and then, when you really want one......

Thats definitely top requirements for my movie prefs. (Well, alongside a good plot.) *sigh*...I love surround sound.

There are some "no way"s but for the most part, if its sci-fi, I like it. But...people, people...no one has mentioned Tron. I wouldnt be surprised to see a remake of that.

I love the Sci-Fi channel, my husband HATES it.

I don't like too read it often, I do like to read Salvatore, and others . I know that is Fantasy but sometimes they go so well together!

.I love surround sound

Yep...ditto to that, trilogy, is there any other way? I have 5.1 surround on my puter as well as my hi.fi and DVD players, so I hear nothing else these days....thundering How else would you view sci.fi, unless immersed in wall to wall sound....vibrations to parallel the lift off of a klingon battle cruiser

Glad to see your mention of 'Tron', one of my favourites, and I like Jeff Bridges as an actor.....a remake would be fantastic if it remained fairly true to the original but with a quality soundtrack.

Anyone else not see #39??? Anyhow...

There is no other favorable way When I'm watching a movie away from home or the theater, I still think about the surround sound experience and how its missing...even for a brief second

Alright, a Tron fan! Thanks starkers, I dont feel like I'm in left field anymore Without hijacking a sci-fi thread, I'll just say that I would 'second' your remake opinion.

Watching some of these on my HDTV in DD 5.1 almost makes you feel like your right in the middle of the battle.

I'm a big Sci-Fi fan. While Asimov, Dick, Clarke, Vonnegut are all great, and I enjoy their work, I prefer newer stuff these days. Favorite authors include William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Neal Stephenson, Nancy Kress, Greg Egan, and John Wright, who wrote the awesome Golden Age trilogy. Spider Robinson writes fantastic time travel stuff, and John Shirley...and...well, there's plenty of talent out there.

I've always enjoyed Sci-Fi tv and movies too, but nothing beats an epic book or series of books, IMO.

I don't see #39

Harlan Ellison for one of the great early writers. Always had an odd take on things which I liked. One of his books made a pretty decent movie 'A Boy and his Dog'. He wrote the original stories for a lot of SciFi shows and movies.

Roger Zelazny was pretty good, although he tended a bit more toward fantasy.

I watch all the Star Treks and like them. Liked all the Star Wars movies.
