Do you like Sci Fi?

Do you like Sci Fi? If so, what genre? Stories relating to planetary colonization? A.I.? Time Travel? The reason I ask is that after a discussion with a friend recently, we came to the conclusion that individuals (at least most of our friends) who are into computers are also into science fiction.

Personally, I like time travel, space travel, computer/robotic/a.i. stories. One of the best artificial intelligence stories I've EVER read is "The Two Faces of Tomorrow" by James P. Hogan. If you have a chance and run across it, give it a read. I think you'll really like it. And let's not forget Star Trek and Star Wars. :CONGRAT:

I don't know if I like Sci FI, but I continually see the Predator mother ship hovering outside my patio door when it gets hot out.

Same as #1 I especially like older sci-fi/fantasy, as in 1940s to 1970s, both movies and books, there were some very unique visionaries in those days. Some of my fave authors like Bradbury, Asimov, Heinlein, Silverberg, Vonnegut, Tolkein, etc. My bookshelves are packed with older books. I also like the movies...one of my favorite sci-fi movies is Andromeda Strain.

Oh Asimov. In my opinion--don't want to start a flame war. --Asimov (R.I.P.), was the king of sci fi. Arthur C. Clark is an excellent co-ruler.

I wish I had the time to read like I did when I was younger. I haven't sat down with a good book and just read in about 3 years. In fact the last thing that I read was Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Waiting to rent the DVD so I can see how well they did on the movie. Does anyone know if it was any good? I've read the book a couple of times so you won't be spoiling anything for me if you comment.

Mine also, another one that I love down to this day is, Forbidden Planet. I remember seeing that waaay back when I was about 5 or 6 y.o. (I'm 41 now) And still think from a story standpoint and from a visual standpoint there was nothing like it.

So, as a side point, what's everybody's top 5 books and/or top 5 movies???

Have to agree Asimov was a genius. Not that I like sci-fi that much at all, naw not me, sure I've seen every episode of star trek and all off shoots, most sci-fi movies sure but I could stop at any time. Sure I read sci-fi books and comics too but I've got it under control *hugs his wookie* It's not like I dress up as a klingon, well not on weekdays anyway, aww I don't have to take this *takes his wookie teddy and leaves the thread*

i have been reading sci-fi for as long as i can remember

i agree Asimov was special, along with Philip k Dick, Arthur C Clark and Robert Heinlein of the older generation writers

modern day genius' (plural of genius?) include authors (as real must reads for serious hard sci-fi fans) Iain M. Banks, David Zindell, Peter F. Hamilton, Jeff Noon, Alistar Reynolds, China Melville, all of who write incredible works of imagination, usually over several volumes...

my all time favorites?...too difficult to say, though the first three Iain M. Banks books (Consider Phileabus, Player of Games and Use of Weapons) are probably the best books i've ever read

I like some sci-fi. Loved Star Trek when Kirk was captain.

Favorite sci-fi movie? Robinson Crusoe on Mars with Paul Mantee and his man Friday! A cult classic (I like the odd ones!).

aufisch, the proposed new B5 movie fell threw. Not going to happen and that pissed me off. So you will just have to do what I do and watch the other 2 B5 movies and the series, which I have on DVD. Also have the DS9 on DVD

Guys - Tolkein isn't Sci-fi. It's fantasy. Big difference.

I love Star Trek. All Except Enterprise witch was very disapointing. My favorite Star Trek series is DS9. I never cared for B5 and always thought of it as a rip off of Star Trek.

As for Star Wars - I only like them because I grew up with them. Other than for that reason I really don't like them. Star Trek is more realistic in terms of were technology is heading. The last 3 were kinda lame.

I forgot! Planet of the Apes!! Loved it!!! Whether it's considered sci-fi or not!

The Omega Man-I think it was called- with Charleton Heston? Is that the one where he finds out that soylent green is a bi-product of human beings?

Damn, I thought I was the only person who ever saw that movie.

I used to like Star Trek, but the story lines started to seem pretty recycled as time went on.

Loved reading Heinlein, Aasimov, Niven, Herbert, etc... I've read all the Dune books, most more than once.

I'm hoping for the Farscape movie, now that they killed the series. At least I have my DVDs for now.

Just bought the BSG season 1 set today!, couldnt wait to get off work to go grab it, LoL..

Stargate is my current favorite,(Have *ALL the season sets, LoL) but Battlestar Galactica is definitely close to taking over that position.. Stargate Atlatis is kinda cool as well...

I grew up with Star Trek, took awhile to get used to the "Next Generation" but I did.. Never really cared for DS9 all that much, or Voyager or Enterprise but I have watched a few...

Sci-Fi Channel is usually what my TV is stuck on even if for nothing more than backround noise, LoL..
Although, a cool show has begun on NBC called "Surface" watched the pilot the other night and it was pretty good! If you havent seen it yet I recommend it!

Thanks for the clarification Kona, hence my reference to sci-fi/fantasy. Which, in literary circles, is commonly combined.

Oh, and definitely a big fan of Star Trek (all of them) and Star Wars! ...and no, I don't own any uniforms or Vulcan ears, nor do I attend any conventions (although I have visited the Star Trek Experience at the Vegas Hilton)

My first sci,fi experiences were as a young pup in the 6o's with 'Dr Who', 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' and 'Lost in Space'....think 'Land of the Giants' was in there somewhere. From there it was 'UFO', 'The Invaders'..... anything and everything 'Star Trek'. These days it's 'Stargate' and 'Stargate Atlantis', being my favourite sci.fi on TV, but all in all, the whole sci.fi spectrum appeals to me.

Whilst the 'Predator' and 'Alien' movies were all great viewing, one of my all-time favourites is 'The Hidden' with Kyle McLachlan.

Nope, oddly enough that movie was called Soylent Green. Inspired by the book Make Room, Make Room by Harry Harrison

The author that got me started was E.E. "Doc" Smith with his LENSMAN series. Thorarinn Gunnarsson who wrote the STARWOLVES series. M.K. Wren, Ben Bova, Bill Baldwin.
Movies? Anything with a conflict with aliens or space battles. (Heavy on Action and SFX)

Totally agree. I read all the robot novels and all the empire novels in order at least once a year. Also have all of Clarke's Odyssey Novels. Recently I've been reading "Saga of the Seven Suns" by Kevin Anderson.

I never was really big on the movie and TV Sci-Fi, although I'll sit through a good Stargate before I'll watch any other TV except maybe the news/weather. Recent Sci-Fi favorite movie would be The Day After.

I learn something new every day! Hehe! Thanks, Tapper! All I really remember is the impact it had on me! Incredible sci-fi story!! And I have to say... for me, the best sci-fi revolves around the 'story,' not neccessarily the technological presentation of the film.

Heinlein was always my favorite SciFi author (Stranger in a Strange Land, Red Planet, Love me love my Lumox). Fantasy would be Tolkien or Stephen R Donaldson (The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever). Robert E. Howard can't be dismissed (Conan). Ursula K. LeGuin another favorite (The EarthSea Trilogy).

Movie? That Star Wars flick was not too bad, but I have to go with Jesse Ventura and Arnold Scharznegger in the original "Predator". "I ain't got time to bleed!!"
