Huge System Error !

Well I just purchased Object Desktop and installed Window Blinds, Gadgets and Icon Packager. Now Windows media player no longer works even after downloading and reinstalling. More frightening is that I can no longer access System Restore... so I can't go to a previous restore point. And finally, the same blank screen that I get for System Restore also appears for User Accounts via control panel. I guess Im pretty much screwed now.

So is this typical for this software ? I can't afford to deal with these kinds of problems on a regular basis as I have more important things to do than spend 6 hours reinstalling XP, Updates and Software.

FYI - This was on a machine with a fresh install (2 weeks old) of XP Pro SP2 and all updates.

Are you sure you didn't install anything else or visit any incriminating websites that could load your PC up with Spyware? Also, a VirusScan would be a good idea. Object Desktop usually does NOT do that sort of stuff to your PC.

What version of IconPackager?

There was a problem with the iprepair.dll in some of the versions which caused some of the symptoms you have.
From and earlier post:

[7/12/05 refresh] We've pulled the iprepair.dll from new distributions. There's occasional problems being reported with it still.

If you wish to disable an existing copy of it, Start / Run /
regsvr32.exe /u "c:\program files\stardock\object desktop\iconpackager\iprepair.dll"

That might fix your media player problem, as I know that happened to me too after installing OD.

Thanks for the prompt replys everyone.

As far as a virus, etc. Im 99% sure that is not the isssue because as I mentioned this was a clean install of XP and until last night I have loaded only a few basic programs (Office, Photoshop, Norton AV etc.) Furthermore, I have only visited a few select sites (my regular forums, etc) so I would have had no malicous scripts or spyware installed. Everything was fine and dandy until last nights install of these products.

The bad thing is that even after UNinstalling all 3 of the stardock products, the damage is already done... and since I can't "Restore" im kinda p!ssed about this.

GREAT LINK !!! Thanks... that KB article describes EXACTLY what is going on with my system. I will try that tonight when I am on my home pc.

I greatly appreciate your insight on this problem and also appreciate the other helpful links given by other posters. They are all helpful... so now I just need to say a few prayers and see if I can fix this.

I will post an update tonight or whenever I have a chance to work on this.

No, it's not typical. I bought the disk back in 2003.
Only major issue I had was with a couple of the newer versions of IconPackager - no system restore, some programs ran but didn't open. Once I ran the unregister command everything went back to being okay.

Well I'm glad to help, haha, I try when I can, best of luck tonight! Also following Bichur's advice for IP, if you ever have a problem that'll fix it 99.999% of the time.
Haha, and I take it you're from Texas eh? I'm an Austinite myself, though I'll admit I don't do my part to "keep Austin weird" sadly...

That's alright, once Leslie wins as mayor... we can just all sit back and watch. Um, watch the rest of Austin, cuz I ain't watching Leslie.
