Vegas Report

Well, I gotta say that the immense size, design and quantity of the hotels is impressive. That's really all I liked. I had a good time as I try to do wherever I go, but overall I kept getting this thought that all of this was funded by people losing money. ... it was expensive, people were fairly rude (maybe due to the heat, 105 deg), and it simply is not a vacation for the thrifty spender nor the non gambler. I did not get a chance to see Hoover damn and there is so much that I did not see, so forgive me if my summation is unfounded, but first impressions based on a 4 day trip:

Go elsewhere unless you're a gambler, or are interested in legal prostitution, strip shows, con artists, expensive food (cheaper if you're gambling), like stale cigarette smoke and crowds.

....ok....but what's the downside?

Yeah, maybe I'm getting old. Honestly the hotels were very cool.

There's no legal prostitution in Clark County, where Vegas resides.

Did you make it to the top of the Stratosphere or downtown?

Welcome back.
Did you ride the coaster???

No coasters as my companions were unwilling. Tarkus, do you mean in Vegas formal or on the strip? Fremont street was cool. The light show was good.

I definitely think that people should go once for the experience, but put a G.Loomis in my hands spooled up with flourcarbon and an Owner drop shot hook, jigging a Hellgie and horsing in a bronzeback with a Shimano and I'm in heaven. Vegas is just not my thing.

You need to get out more....

Is he talking about fishing or mountain biking?

Fishing. Nobody can put on the glitz like a good sunset on the water.

I've been to the Ginza district in Tokyo, Tenerife on the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, Paris, Madrid, Cazumel Mexico, Canada, and all over the US. Different people like different things, I guess. Next holiday (vacation) will be Costa Rica. Always wanted to go to a real "Jungle". Always wanted to go to Oz, too, but can't quite swing the fare.

Give me the beach in Hawaii in the early morning or at sunset, and I am in heaven.

Hope the change of scenery was at least a nice break.

It was. Thanks Corky. I did, however see visions of chameleons dancing in my head.

Well, at least ONE person here understood all that fishing terminology, SD

...next time, just go wet a line mate. Way more enjoyment in that than the glitz of a city.

Ah, Bill! Try Yosemite - it's heaven on earth!!

This young lady came up to my back door at Yosemite Lodge, as I was sipping on some Merlot! I'd pass up the Merlot any day to get a glimpse of this doe again.

*Edit-the pic is a little tilted, probably because of the Merlot, but Merlot or not, I'll never forget the experience of coming face to face with her first hand!

I can't think of anywhere I would like to go less, than Las Vegas. Having worked in Casinos for 28 years, it would be what we in England call a "Busmans Holiday". I would rather camp out in my back yard than go to Vegas.

Glad you got home safe SD.
Sorry to hear the fishin in Vegas is so bad
When you go to Costa Rica take an open face reel and medium-heavy rod in the 7' range for the inshore or close to shore fishin. 40lb trilene big game should be good for most of whats biting. If you go offshore the charter will provide all the gear you need. Not much call for fly fishing unless you can find some inland water. Unlike the north and midwest, bugs aren't as crucial to fish diets down south.

I assume you use small pets
You know, one of the things that gets me is that the 9 yr old boy in our group loves video games (like most of us), so every place we went was blinking lights and the sounds of slot machines. Now he really wants to play them. Blame me for bringing him around them, or you might say "no big deal", but I certainly don't want to encourage any youth to start gambling. Live and learn.

Sorry to hear your trip was not what you thought it would be SD.

You probably would have had more fun camping on the Mojave shooting jackrabbits

With my camera, of course. Searching for the elusive Jack-a-lope.
They say they are more likely to come around if they smell beer.

If you're referring to prostitution, it's illegal anywhere close to Vegas. You have to travel north to the rural areas to get to legal prostitution. It's a common misconception about Vegas.

BTW, you never did say whether or not you made it to the top of the Stratosphere.

I was misinformed, I guess. There sure are a lot of flyers handed out in Vegas for it. I did not make it to the Stratosphere. I was accomodating the desires of those I was with and really did not do much of anything I had hoped to do. Maybe that contributed to my negative opinions.

Most of those flyers are for "escorts" and "models," and they're careful not to promise sex. If you see an ad for actual sex for money, it will include a map on how to get there, out of town.

Tarkus, you seem awfully well informed on that subject......

Which would be yet another scam for some guy hoping for something he's not going to get and dishing out all sorts of money for it. I was trying to get directions to a restaurant and this guy starts offering me free meals and wouldn't get to the point on what was expected in return. I've been to enough tourists traps to spot a snake. Eventually he said "all you have to do is calm down and listen to one of our presentations"
Calm Down? Calm down? I should have put him through the front windshield of a Taxi. As it was, I said "no thanks" and walked away. "calm down". You really shouldn't be telling people in 105 degree weather to calm down. I have not so much as raised my voice in years, but maybe my expression was aggresive. "calm down". What he is doing is one step above telemarketing. "calm down". I'll show him "calm down"

Last time I made a joke about a similar subject, I had a stalker on here for several days.
