Windows Vista commentary

Some thoughts on Microsoft's next OS

Based on the polls I've seen, especially around here, Windows Vista, as a name, is not terribly liked.  I am in the minority, I think it's a fine name.  One of the reasons why I like how Microsoft names their OSes is that every few years, would-be web entrepreneurs get a fresh start.  Programs that include the words "XP" in them (or websites) have to be quick on their feet to get a Vista based domain or program name.  No resting on ones laurels.

Name aside, a lot of people around here are probably wondering, what is going to be so great about Windows Vista and how will it affect your favorite programs and desktop enhancements?

I've written up two articles that explore those two questions:

I like the name, but it will probably grow on me like XP did. However, like somebody else said, I think that Microsoft could possibly switch to the Avalon name and give Avalon the Vista name. It might cause some confusion at first, but I think that more people would like it (or at least myself ).

Let's face it, what is in a name? Vista is ok for the new Windows. Glad to see XP vanish. And, it is a big change for Microsoft having used numbers and letters in the past, "95, 98, ME, XP, NT, 2003". I'll see if MS will use Vista in other products as well, Wndows Vista Server, Microsoft Office Vista? Who knows. But, for now, Vista is OK and a BIG change for MS.

PS, Vista makes me, somehow, think of IBM. Didn't they have Notebooks named Vista?

I too in the minority like the name Vista....with all the negativity & Microsoft bashing that goes on these days I hope the OS has some merit - at least for PC users.

I'm not that fussed either way. As long as it's a good OS they can call it whatever they want.

I don't like the name Vista, but as long as it finally delivers me full 64 bit when it comes out - with driver support - and doesn't have too many hardware DRM tie-ins, I'll be happy.

I just got a VAIO desktop with Media Center Addition, It's awesome, and I'm just getting used to all the possibilities. This Windows Vista, which I hate the tacky name of, will it have all the features of Windows XP Media Center addition?

I like the name of Windows Vista and what it promises to bring us... Hey, what could you lose? It's going to be better than Windows XP, so I'm only worried about the price.

Did XP cost just ad much as ME did when it came out> I think so.

I'm going to buy it anyway no matter the price, assuming my new 3.2 GHz 512meg GeForce 6600 can run it.
And I bet it can. ;o)
