Microsoft going to bring command-line shell into the 20th century

Yes, I said 20th century

http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20050607_193855.html

The command prompt hasn't undergone much change in the past decade.  In fact, it's still less powerful than OS/2's CMD.exe released back in 1991!

The command line interface to the Windows Server OS will be changed to the new Monad Shell (MSH), in a phased implementation to take place over the next three to five years. This confirmation comes from Microsoft senior vice president Bob Muglia in an interview published today by Microsoft.

Funny, wasn't there before.

But i still dont understand what you mean by "updated to the 20th Century". If it's being updated, it's being updated to the 21st century surely?

Reble, uh yea it was there before.  Sorry you missed it.  What I meant by 20th century is that what MS is proposing doesn't look any more impressive than what Unix/Linux and OS/2 have had since the 90s.

I find it fairly pathetic that microsoft still hasnt done this.... yet they put things like that bastard paper clip that nags me to death on microsoft office.
But hey everyone is not a programmer so I guess they are catering to their market. I just hope they dont bring another half-assed product to the table, and use their monopoly to make it standard throughout the computing world.
I put money in that they will.

I was serious, you know. The implication is that it is archaic, but what exactly is so wrong or outdated about it then? And what do other shells (the console kind of shell) do better?

It looks like all microsoft is doing is creating their own scripting language and it will run on this new shell.

Does anyone know if MS will do something smart like make windows based off of the shell again. Cause if its the same as it is in XP, then it wont be anywhere near as good as bash

yeah that was expected.
This new shell will come out in 3-5 years according to ms.
Longhorn will come in 2 years max (i think).

Chances are MS may even charge for MSH.

Bash shell hasn't gotten a change in years. Mabey if MS comes a little bit close to it (mabey equal it or surpasse it!!!) , the linux developers will go into a frenzy and upgrade the shell to uterly destroy it.

I sounds like its a mix of python and ruby though.
