I was quite happy porting a MSstyle that took my fancy, and then, all of a sudden, Skin Studio and Windowblinds just froze. Ctrl, Alt, Delete got me out of that predicament okay, but would either program work a bit later, no, not on yer life. Oh no, it seems I'm off to SDC for clean copies yet again. I dunno, just when it seems I've got everything running right again, with one trouble after another, something else inevitably has to go wrong. That Murphy has alot to answer for. Just because something can go wrong, it doesn't mean it has to, especially on my machine. Even more annoying, my carefully organised backup copies even refused to rectify the situation. Must have done something wrong again - well that's what my wife would think. She didn't do it, so it must be my fault kinda logic. The credit where credit's due motto. Pity its in short supply when or if I get it right. More is the pity that's not too often, LoL

Okay, so I'm a bit of a newbie clutz, and yeah, have a giggle at my expense if you like, but hey, there's mishaps going on out there besides mine. So okay, when the WB purists and skinners have stopped belly laughing at my MSstyle folly, who else can relate or admit to a boo boo, self made or otherwise, and how it was resolved - by perseverence or a techie, etc?

Truth be known, me thinks I've a physical problem. My ears detect a rather loud humming sound coming from my box, and it wasn't there before. I wonder if that caused the problem. According to the meters, my PCU seems to be running within the norm, and the system fans seem okay too, but it sounds mechanical somehow, and beyond my expertise, not that I have alot to begin with. Food and the bills can wait - my baby is off to the puter doctor for a check up. Sadly, a computer surgeon I am not.

Who needs viruses - seems I can wreak enough havoc of my own without them Happy computing everyone

Since a certain site 'wraps' the MSstyles in spyware, etc ....if you were to be using one of those in your conversion there's a chance the 'issue' you have is caused by the spyware/trojan/whatever....not WB at all...

Thanks Jafo! Yeah I thought of that, but before and after sweeps with Nortons, Adaware and MS Antispy showed no such presence. After a previous issue with wrapping, I'm very cautious and no longer visit "that" site. No, the style came from another source and appears to be clean (link obtained from WC).

It would seem that I do have a hardware problem that's causing issues as other programs are also misbehaving when my system begins to hum more than normal. Luckily I have a dual boot and all seems well on this other drive - fingers crossed. A trip to the PC doctor tomorrow is inevitable.

'Humming' is usually due to either wear within spinning objects (eg fans, HDD) or a mains fault of some kind (i.e power supply).

Maybe that can help you track it down?

Yeah, but given his symptoms with the crashing even after clean installs, it seems to point to the hard drive. If that is the case, at least it's good that HD's are pretty cheap nowadays.

Dunno if your 'angry' smiley is directed at me or not?.. but I agree anyway.

Don't forget, however, that a faulty fan (eg CPU, or GPU) can result in overheating of the chip which also leads to random crashes IME.

Hummings aren't all that bad, all though you're right in beeing suspicious of new humms. Something a friend of mine should have been before the humming suddenly changed to a "Pang! Rattattattattatta Clonk Rattattattatta Ping Bonk Rattattattattattatta". I was there when i happend and it really is one of the last things you want to hear comming form your computer except for perhaps "Pop! Fszzzzzzh...." followed by a tiny stream of smoke.

thanks fella's, the problem came down to the CPU fan being temperamental and causing some overheating - fixed now thank goodness. Only cost $25 AU, so I could still afford to buy food,

Really thought I'd done something wrong though, or that the WC gods were frowning down upon me for porting MSstyles: ie, bestowing upon me a plague of catastrophes for my sins. Coulda been a short, sharp shock, not the do it again, perhaps

So how about a few tales about computer boo boos - some funny ones even better. An acquaintance told me how he had joined this peer to peer group to gain illegal access to software, movies and etc, and about a week or so later, he discovered some rather explicit photos of himself and his wife had been plastered all over the adult net, acquired from his computer, obviously. Didn't approve of his joining it in the first place, and my uproarious laughter at his new-found stardom (just deserts) was not at all appreciated. Okay then, who can contribute an interesting puter story?

And speaking of drummers, I went to school wih one of the greats: ginger Baker of Cream and Blind Faith fame. Also met John Bonham and the others of Led Zeppelin when they toured Australia.

HDD might be cheap these days but I would still have to save up to get one. I get less than $20 bucks a month to spend.

Another possible cause of my software problems could have been Nortons Internet Security 2004. I recently installed it and immediately had troubles with it, the first being that it would not scan for viruses, and then it refused to let me access the options though no changes had been made to the administrator priveleges etc. I finally got it to run properly after 3 installs, but then various other programs seemed to occasionally malfunction for some reason. I've since uninstalled it and reverted to 2003 again cos it became temperamental and behaved strangely: ie, sometimes wouldn't let me log on to change settings. Since going back to 2003 for the time being, I've had no problems at all. It may be that I have a bad copy and my comp store say they'll exchange it as others have reported similar issues. So if anyone else finds their 2004 copy become temperamental and is causing problems, perhaps an exchange for another copy is the solution.
