Widget communities cropping up

DesktopX, Konfabulator, Dashboard - critical mass reached?

MSNBC has a story on how widgets are starting to take off. With Apple's release of MacOS X Tiger with its "dashboard" feature, some pundits are thinking that widgets may have reached critical mass.

The same thing happened in the skinning world with the release of Windows XP.  The basic skinning features in XP helped take Stardock's WindowBlinds to the next level in popularity.  Will the same happen with widgets?

This brings to mind Stardocks own site DesktopGadgets.com
When will this launch? It seems like it is due.

At least they mention Stardock, but they really should've included a WinCustomize.com link if they included the other one. I bet a nicely worded email to the editor/author about "balance" would get that link added in there.

when will the DesktopX widget site going to be put up?

It's being worked on.  It won't be a widget site. It'll be a gadget site.

leave it to apple to popularize an existing idea.

a few months ago i was showing off objectdesktop software to one of our IT guys at the office. applejuice pumps through his veins, we always bicker at each other over coffee. i showed him desktopx, and the widget ability, and didn't get much more than a half-hearted "that's nice" in return.. i think he said something about how they were pointless.

the other day i was down there to say hi, and noticed he had a mac mini set up amidst the PC-ridden workbench. i said 'oh, does that have Tiger on it?' and he said "yeah! and look at THIS:" - he punched a hot key which brought up a field of widgets.

i think i'll get the apple logo tattooed on my forehead, so poeple pay more attention to me.
