LOL, I actually say that to people pretty close to my age if I encounter them in a service type of setting (as in "Excuse me sir/mam, can you help me find XYZ?") I use it as a general title for anyone I do not know but need to ask a question of. I get weird looks though when I do that... but would they prefer me yell "Hey you!" at them?

In an unfamiliar setting, I agree. But when it is a co worker or such, I tell them I am not a Sir! Young Whippersnappers!

my "favorite" is when some young man shoves me aside and calls me granpa,,, then realizes his shove did not budge me.. aHHHHHHH the looks change immediatly from scorn to respect. lol
